here's a tough one

my assertion is that the best CB's are the ones who shut down their side of the field

therefore a good stat would be the CB who has the fewest tackles/pds (but favor pd's over tackles of course) with the highest number of snaps.

Well, assuming you had stats like that, another way to read them would be that that CB was getting burned all the time.

instead of the highest number of snaps, it should be the highest number of pass attempts.

I think if you look for the best shutdown CB, a ton of tackles doesn't meen that the CB isn't any good, you have to check and see where those tackles came from. Agent Ocho on our own Reykjavik Aggies had 95 tackles last season, but only about 1/3 of those came from pass plays to his man. The rest came from ST, rushing plays or tackling somebody else's man.

Also, few PDs doesn't account for a shutdown CB either, he could of had a ton of passes come his way, but he just sucks and can't even get PDs. A better measure of a shutdown CB is completions allowed/pass attempts that went to his man. IMO it's the only way to really figure out who is a better shutdown CB.

the other thing is, PDs are just as good as anything else, even for a shutdown corner. just because a cornerback is really good doesn't mean a QB can't/won't throw his direction. some quarterbacks have poor vision and throw into good coverage. some quarterbacks HAVE to throw at a shutdown corner because the play was designed to go to that receiver in order to gain significant yardage on 3rd and long.

Yep I sidestepped the CB issue quite nicely thank you.

Its impossible to judge on stats, but I have the Defensive points scoring Award, so maybe a ...

"If He Could Catch He'd Be A WR Award For Most PDs Without An Interception"

PDs- INTs -Name
20 - 0 -- Pacman Scofflaw
19 - 0 -- JD Cover
17 - 0 -- arnaud shutdown
15 - 0 -- Jimmy Lister
15 - 0 -- Thomas VanLeek
14 - 0 -- Demetrious Frangos
14 - 0 -- Hannu Syrjä
13 - 0 -- Ashton McGee
13 - 0 -- joe west

that's almost exactly what I'm talking about. A great CB, stuck in the #1 spot could statistically (tackles/pd's) look worse than a second or 3rd string CB. However from what I've seen the #1 CBs can often take their side out of a play completely so the QB doesn't even bother throwing there. That's great coverage.

I know with my CB when I line him up as the #1 CB I'll have a solid game with maybe 1 tackle and 2 PD's against a balanced team. I could then put him in the #2 spot against a similarly balanced team and have 8 tackles (6 from rushes), 8 pd's, 1 int, 1 FF

Yeah, CB is tough unless you really watch the play by plays. Otherwise you just never know.

Perhaps a couple more for team defense:

"Deep Penetration Award" - Highest % of TFL/running plays
"Waterboy Award" - Highest % of Sacks & Hurries/passing plays

I think a true shutdown corner is like Deion Sanders. The man couldn't tackle to save his life, but his man was never open, hence it was never thrown his way. If it was, it got intercepted, knocked down, or was thrown so that Sanders couldn't get it, which meant 90% of the time neither could the receiver.

Have you EVER watched him play?

Because of his quote about being paid to defend passes not make tackles, TONS of people assume he was a piss poor tackler, which was not the case.

Deion was, technically, a damn good tackler for a CB. Just because it wasn't his favorite part of defensive duty, or the most important part, doesn't mean he wasn't good at it.
