Eastern Conference Week 5
1) Akron Assassins: 5-0
Last Game: 37-17 win over Tampa
Pros: It’s good to see Akron finally face a team that had a chance against them. They gave up a big 60 yard TD pass, but other than that really shut Tampa down. They allowed only 33 rushing yards on 19 carries and had 6 hurries and 3 sacks. QB DaMan DaSchiz III had another big game throwing for 327 yards and 4 TDs. Their D-Line combined for 5 of the hurries and all 3 sacks.
Cons: HB Mother Hubbard had a pretty bad game. He was given the ball 30 times and only managed to pick up 69.5 yards. He was also tackles for loss 4 times and fumbled once, though the offense did recover. Not much else went wrong for the Assassins and whatever questions people had about them and their early season schedule have been answered
Next Game: at North Carolina Lighthouses
2) Alpine Golfers: 5-0
Last Game: 48-3 win over Orlando
Pros: Like Akron they just keep on winning. They’ve beaten better opponents so far this season, but really haven’t been tested since week 2. This is still basically a 1a) and 1b) situation. As for this game the 534-157 yard difference tells the story, it was just a completely dominating performance by Alpine all around. To mention all the guys who had a great game would take up too much space.
Cons: Alpine is probably unhappy that they allowed a FG and had to punt 3 times.
Next Game: vs Denver Stallions
3) Chicago Bruins: 4-1
Last Game: 39-3 win over New Orleans
Pros: Since their week 1 loss to Alpine the Bruins have gone off on every team they faced, including 3 tough opponents in the Comets, Speed, and Eagles. In their 4 wins they’ve outscore the opponents by a combined 134-3….134-4. Most teams won’t do that during any four game stretch, and the Bruins did it while playing 3 of the East’s top 10. Fred O’Bannion is the leagues top kicker, and he proved it again in this win, going 6/6 including 3/3 of FGs over 50 yards.
Cons: QB Duke Hill threw a couple INTs, but it didn’t really matter. The Bruins schedule doesn’t get any easier with games against Tampa and Memphis coming up, we’ll see if they can keep rolling
Next Game: vs Tampa Vipers
4) Memphis Ghetto Dawgs: 4-1
Last Game: 34-0 win over Richmond
Pros: Another good team takes down Richmond with ease, shutting them out in the process. CB Lewis Jones led the way for the defense with 4 Tackles, 1 Forced Fumble, 7 Pass Deflections, and 2 INTs, including one he returned for a TD. G Fatso Elliot helped protect his QB with 13 pancakes.
Cons: HB John Green was so-so and the number 2 HB Hector Gonzego didn’t do much better. Things like that just don’t matter as much when your defense shuts the opponent down completely
Next Game: at New Orleans Eagles
5) North Carolina Lighthouses: 5-0
Last Game: 30-21 win over Klamath Falls
Pros: It took a HUGE second half but North Carolina kept its undefeated season alive with the win over the Grizzlies. QB Dan Marino played well despite not having big numbers, and HB Trucking OverYou had big numbers, but only because he got the ball 36 times. CB Joe Rippa had another good game with 10 tackles and 2 pass deflections
Cons: The combined record of the 5 teams North Carolina beat is 5-20. In the last two they have been tested. This week vs Akron could show everyone, including myself that this team should be a top 2 team if not number 1. It could also show that 5-0 was nice, but obvious considering who they were playing, and be the start of a serious downfall. I’m rooting for the underdog in this one but if I had money it’d be on Akron.
Next Game: vs Akron Assassins
6) New Orleans Eagles: 3-2
Last Game: 3-39 loss to Chicago
Pros: Ouch! This team is really on a downslide after starting 3-0. The problem is their offense just can’t get going, and didn’t even really get going in the games they won. They beat Schenectady on FGs, Elk Rapids with 20, and Richmond with 23. Dillious Oreleus threw 5 INTs this game, and you will rarely see a team win with numbers like that from its starting QB. Back to the drawing board for the Eagles
Cons: The whole Pros section was basically one big con. Other than a couple INTs, nothing good came from this game
Next Game: vs Memphis Ghetto Dawgs
7) Richmond Speed: 2-3
Last Game: 0-34 loss to Memphis
Pros: Back to back to back losses for the Speed, another team who is on their way down. The only consolation is they lost all 3 to teams currently ranked ahead of them, so it’s not like they are losing to bad teams.
Cons: They haven’t scored a point in 2 games, and are going to need to find a rushing game if they want to bounce back. They get to face Philadelphia next week so we’ll get to see how good (or bad) this team really is
Next Game: vs Philadelphia Brokebacks
8) Tampa Vipers: 2-3
Last Game: 17-37 loss to Akron
Pros: Tampa shouldn’t be ashamed to lose to Akron, it’s going to happen to many more teams this season. They were still able to put up 17 points, and WR Scotty Thunder had a big game.
Cons: If this team wants to be looked upon as a top 3 team, its going to have to beat one of the top 3 and I just don’t know if they have the firepower unless they have a bunch of boosting left to do. It doesn’t get any easier this week against the Bruins, especially considering the tear that Chicago has been on as of late
Next Game: at Chicago Bruins
9Schenectady Comets: 2-3
Last Game: 22-0 win over Forgotten
Pros: A 2 game win streak for the Comets puts them back into the chase for a playoff spot, at least at this early point of the season. K Joe Czerniak who made 5 FGs all last season was a cool 5/5 in this game, and a shoutout goes to the backup QB who threw a TD pass to the 5th string WR, in what was the Comets only TD of the game. The defense held the One’s to fewer yards than all 3 undefeated teams did.
Cons: You HAVE to score more than 22 points when you face the Ones. Granted, they were good enough to get into FG position 5 times, but the offense really hasn’t gotten going all season. Are the Comets a top 9 team at the moment? Yes. Are they a top 8 team? Probably not.
Next Game: vs Orlando Mambas
10) South Beach Tokers: 3-2
Last Game: 15-6 win over Denver
Pros: 3 wins in a row for South Beach and they have a good shot to make it four against the Grizzlies next week. This game was strictly FGs, so Andy Baer for going 5/5, and making all of those FGs from over 30 yards.
Cons: We all know they’re beating up on the weakest teams in the league. They are however winning, which is more than some can say. Their running game isn’t great and their QB was hurried 8 times this game. Though Klamath Falls won’t be an easy game, after the Grizzlies comes the reality check with games vs NC/Tampa/Alpine/Schenectady. If they can pull of 2 of those they will actually have a shot at the playoffs.
Next Game: vs Klamath Falls Grizzlies
11) Klamath Falls Grizzlies: 2-3
Last Game: 21-30 loss to North Carolina
Pros: It was tough to drop the Grizzlies down 2 spots after they played NC as tough as they did, and they probably could have still been ranked 9th. I bet very few people thought that they could come out of week 6 at 3-3, but they are in a good position to do so. LB Jimbo Davis had a big game on defense with 10 tackles, 2 for loss, and a forced fumble
Cons: They split carries between their backs evenly, and while Michael Quick had an OK game, Austin Carr was just not all there, averaging only 1.4 yards per carry, while getting stopped for a loss 5 times, and fumbling once. Quick did fumble 3 times, but none were lost.
Next Game: at South Beach Tokers
12) Philadelphia Brokebacks: 2-3
Last Game: 26-0 win over Elk Rapids
Pros: They let HB Pete Moore do the work for them this game, as he rushed for over 100 yards and a TD. Their punt returner Cut Diamond also had a nice return for a TD in the middle of the 3rd quarter that really sealed the game for them. DE Jonah Shackleford is being mentioned again here. This time with 4 tackles, 1 sack, 2 hurries and a forced fumble
Cons: Very little bad things to say about the Brokebacks after this game. Pete Moore did fumble twice but both were recovered by the offense. The kicker missed an XP as well as a FG, but that happens to all kickers at this point in their development.
Next Game: at Richmond Speed
13) Denver Stallions: 1-4
Last Game: 6-15 loss to South Beach
Pros: It’s not that this team has played bad this season, in starting off 1-4, they just haven’t gotten any breaks. Other than the Akron and Tampa games, they have played well. Just not well enough to win. Sadly that’s not going to change against Alpine this week. K B & M continued the kickers playing well trend, nailing two pretty long FGs in the loss.
Cons: The Stallions have lost two games they could have won, and a for this team it’s something they can’t afford. They are better than they were last year. HBs Dual Threat and Speedy Greatness really need to start living up to their names
Next Game: at Alpine Golfers
14) Orlando Mambas: 0-5
Last Game: 3-48 loss to Alpine
Pros: It will be interesting to see what team is better out of the currently winless teams. Orlando’s had a tough schedule so far, only having 1 team with a losing record. In this game nothing really got going.
Cons: Their starting HBs had 0.4 and 0.7 YPC....enough said
Next Game: at Schenectady Comets
15) Elk Rapids Elks: 0-5
Last Game: 0-26 loss to Philadelphia
Pros: WRs KB Killer and Ethan Holsinger both had good games in the losing effort. CB Kick Push Coast had 13 tackles and 3 pass deflections to lead the defense
Cons: Considering they played against Richmond and New Orleans so well, you have to wonder whats gone wrong. Maybe it goes to show you that Richmond and New Orleans weren’t as good as we all thought, considering the last 2-3 weeks. In fairness to the Elks, although they have yet to play Alpine, Akron, or NC, they’ve had one of the toughest schedules so far
Next Game: vs Forgotten Ones
16) Forgotten Ones: 1-5
Last Game: 0-22 loss to Schenectady Comets
Pros: The good news it they have a new owner, who seems committed to trying to turn this team around
Cons: The bad news is its probably not going to happen this season
Next Game: at Elk Rapids Elks
Week 5 games to Watch
#1 Akron Assassins at #5 North Carolina Lighthouses
It may not have the appeal of the rapidly approaching Akron/Alpine matchup but this should be a good one. North Carolina looking to prove to the doubters that they have what it takes to be a championship contender. Akron looking to show NC that, they’re just another stepping stone. As I said before, I’ll be rooting for NC but betting on Akron.
#8 Tampa Vipers at #3 Chicago Bruins
A tough draw for Tampa, coming off their loss to Akron. They look to be the ones to stop the Bruins, who have become a major force in this conference. I think this will be an interesting matchup, and closer than some might expect
#4 Memphis Ghetto Dawgs at #6 New Orleans Eagles
New Orleans really needs to stop their losing streak, but like Tampa, they picked a bad team to attempt that against. Memphis just scores points, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they scored more than Chicago did against New Orleans last week. The question is, can the Eagles get some offense and make this a shootout?
