The punter on my team has punted 63 times this season, including all scrim games. We've given up 2 PR TDs. I'm not going to go through and calculate net yardage for each game, but 61 punts that weren't TDs is probably some pretty solid net yardage. And we aren't punt crazy either, almost all of those are in 7+ yards to go situations that most likely wouldn't be converted.

...I was just pointing out how a TD or 2 on ST can even up the balance regardless on the yards gained on ST coz the wrestle for yardage gets reset after half time, so that 35 or so yards might not register on the scoreboard coz 15 yards may have been before half time, but the TDs on PRs quickly account for the ground lost during the game ...somtimes we miss out on the bonuses for not punting, but it could give us the edge that makes the difference to the final result

it was the choice that I made for this season to not punt, but our ST has always been accountable for returners ...I just wanted to try avoiding the risk in favor for another shot at saving the drive

Yeah I understand, we are normally a team that doesn't punt much. We went with a P/K like season 12 I think.
It is basically a coin toss this season. If we get stuffed inside our 30 we will punt 75% of the time. I understand your approach and agree with what works for your style. Your a proven coach and you know best what works for you.....I just hope we get to face you again this season, because that means both our teams are going to the big dance. Just an FYI I agree with yas.

Hahah look @ this game. Watch the 1st Quarter. The little 15 yard punts saved our asses. Our Defense was able to hold just enough. If you watch this game you shall see how many times we were 4 and out before we finally got some momentum.

I could understand going for it on 4th and 4, I plan to do that myself, but going for it on 4th and 9 just because of a small chance at a PR TD? Seems silly to me.

Sorry, but I'm not impressed by a ton of PR TDs in 100-0 wins. I know they happen in close games too, but that's where the vast majority of those stats are coming from. They are very rare against teams with good STs. We'll see if you can do that deep in the playoffs when it really matters. Can't help but notice your last game. You dominated your opponents, but they had 72 net punting yards and you had 0 PR TDs.

We had 2 PRs against us yesterday... so... keep that in mind when your punting the ball.

Ya that accounted for a whopping 42.5 yards of field position for our D and 2 scores for the bad guys according to this flawed logic. Maybe the OPs intent is to get more people to punt so he too can score on a couple returns a game.

That is very bad. I wouldn't expect that to happen in a normal game. Do you have dedicated STers? If not, I would probably suggest not punting.

Dedicated ST players in peewee? What a joke.

Only thing that matters to me is the playoffs.. and by playoff time I can build a punter that can average over 30 yards a punt. when the punter kicks it that far, the coverage gets down the field and makes the stop. In a defense dominated sim your punter can punt 5-10 times and that 20+ yard net is HUGE. and... every once in a while your punter can boom a 40 yard punt out of bounds.

My Ds are usually pretty solid too, but I'll take the chance and punt. I've won more games on field position then I've lost on punt returns.

as for dedicated ST players... you can do it both ways.. with our without.. anyone that isn't scared of Fighting Gamecocks special teams is crazy.... those 5 dedicated ST Centers along with his Linebackers are tough.. FG is doing just fine with using 5 roster spots for special teams players too. FG is the only team I've played the last few seasons that makes me think about NOT punting.

So to sum up the debate...

I'd recommend not punting, ever, don't even make a punter. After losing 2 games a few seasons ago due to ST TD's, I haven't punted since. I don't care about the yardage, my defense is good enough to stop them. Points is all I'm really worried about.

or do this...

... but you better have a good D regardless.

Thank you Nif, but since those two things are opposites it seems we need to continue debating. Why do you think your team gave up 2 PR TDs anyway? Did you have the right players on STs? Did you just get unlucky?

Prolly not much to do with luck. We haven't put alot of emphasis on ST with our O and D sucking so much ass this season. We don't employ STOPs. I usually have a dedicated return man/gunner type but the past couple seasons its been up to our WRs. The first return looked like a block in the back and a couple defenders running way out wide to leave a gaping hole for them to walk through. The second looks like more of the same with half the coverage team taking themselves out of the play and the lolK/P watching him run by w/out so much as a diving tackle attempt.

Not wanting to take anything away from the PNP ST coordinators but returns are quite random with or without dedicated ST players. I only quoted those two threads because those are two of Pee Wees brightests minds telling you two very different things. I guess it comes down to each teams roster and personal preference.

EDIT: Just to add... We wouldn't have normally punted that many times but I altered our ai a bit because I thought our punt mans strength was at a point where he could start heeding the advice you and others are giving and actually get those crucial field position yards. I was kinda wrong. We even slotted a spot for a real punter on next seasons roster but that might change now.

We've let the kicker do the punting a few seasons now. I can tell you that strength alone is not enough to get distance on a punt and that punting alone also isn't. Our oop punter really doesn't start picking up numbers until later in the season when/if punting and strength are near capped or better.
