College football playoff system >>>>>>> a few weak rivalries (with potential for OOC game)

LOL!

You are in dreamland imo.

There is no D1 football playoff for the exact same reason that the big 12 is being dissolved. M-O-N-E-Y

Likewise if you think it could never happen...

Like you said its money driven... a massive realignment/consolidation of the conferences has the potential to increase the possibility of a D1 playoff. If all of these teams leave the Big 12 (imagine if the Big 12 ceases to exist) it completely changes the dynamics of the bowl selection process considering teams/conferences that were once perceived weak may now be strong and vice versus. Basically, it breaks the mold and allows opportunity for things to progress toward a workable playoff system.

Big 10 has no desire to add dead weight, thanks.

Or if MU weren't invited to the MW with the KS schools, which they haven't been.

Yep, that's why they are the most profitable conference and the model for what other conferences are now trying to do.

It's going to take some time- I still don't accept Penn State as Big Ten. Will be quite happy, though, if this whole reshuffling leaves ND and their prima donna atitude on the outside looking in.

Notre Dame is swinging in the breeze. They need to pony up, and join a conference, or they are just going to be left out. The Big 10 is now the big 11, and it becoming the big 12 won't hurt anything for them. There are so many advantages to them joining the big 10, (name changing coming) that it isn't funny.

Get them in to make it 12 teams, and have a championship game..... That can do nothing but better college football.

It was already the Big 11, Nebraska makes it 12. I think the Big 10 is trying to hold out expanding more until ND feels like they need to join someone to keep from being left out (which may never happen). At that point the Big 10 will look to someone like Rutgers or Maryland to pull in a big market on the east coast to even numbers up.

Yah, your right. I forgot about Penn State. 13 teams would make it uneven. I hope to God that they put in a championship game though.

Yeah I agree and think it was a major reason for expanding to 12 teams (more $$$ for conference with championship game). I expect a championship game in 2011. The big question is how do they split teams up for the two conferences?? Geographically it would probably be.....

West
Nebraska
Iowa
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Illinois
Northwestern

East
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Purdue
Indiana
Penn State

....but I can see that people will argue it is unbalanced. At the same time, classic rivalries like Ohio State vs. Michigan would be hard to break up.

It doesn't actually seem all that unbalanced to me.

Sure, Nebraska and Wisconsin have had down years recently, but both are still top tier. Iowa is a damn good team, too. Minnesota, Northwestern, and Illinois (without Zook) have to capability to be good teams.

The East looks powerful, but Michigan isn't what it used to be (and won't be until R-Rod leaves), and Ohio State can be inconsistent in big games. JoePa always has Penn State ready, but even then they have a tendency to stumble late. Purdue is up and down, as is Michigan State, and Indiana is up and coming, but not quite there yet.

So I like the look of those divisions... Interesting to see if they try to make it 14, and DO pick up a Rutgers or Maryland... Or better yet, Missouri (for the West) and Pittsburgh (for the East).
