Because that's how the Quran refers to God.

I am offended by any talk of religion since I don't recognize any of them and I lump them all together...I think christianity is just as dreadful as islam and I feel religion is the easiest way to create barriers among people. ya everyone has a right to believe what they want but I don't waste my time trying to live up to archaic standards of living based on man-made prophecy's. Life is easy..treat people like you would like to be treated and then use common sense the rest of the way.
Hmmm...Maybe I should start a religion...It will be called Commonsensinity. I will write a bible for my faith and call it The Book of Common Sense. Then I will tour the world like Benny Hinn and claim I can cure people of their flawed sense of mind to rid them of the scourge that religion is in the world. It will be glorious.
Heres a little fact to chew on: The more educated people get they are the less likely to believe in or follow religion. Don't assume education and IQ mean the same thing either. Someone can be educated and not have a high IQ. Educated means having gone to college to some degree whether it be a few years and never earned a degree or someone that got their PhD and everything inbetween. It also means to be informed about the topic at hand. If you think I pulled this outa my ass a study was done in the UK around the beginning this year, Richard Lynn a professor of psychology conducted a study on how educated people don't or are less likely to believe in god. heres a link about it -

Let us look at the Catholic Church as a good example that they pretty much need to brainwash their followers into believing. Catholic Schools bash you everyday from the time you first start school at 5 or 6 years old all the way through grade 12 about believing in their religion. They pretty much have to because the more education people get the less likely they will follow what they are teaching...look at the birth control issue and the catholic church, they sure have mishandled that for at least half a century by now.
My official stance is that I am an Agnostic. If you don't know what that is then look it up. I realize this probably doesn't belong on our GLB forums but some of the responses in this thread spawned it outa me.

The only reason I believe in God is because no one or no thing can tell me the meaning of life. And I have an IQ of 168.

That is surprising with an IQ that high...in fact your very statement should be your reasoning for NOT believeing in a god. It is a very contradicting statement in in of itself.
Let me get this right...your reasoning for believing in God is that no one can tell you the meaning of life yet religion and the notion of God pretty much gives the definition or the meaning of life. God or Gods are man-made prophecy's used for a minority of people to control a majority of peoples through scare tactics, fear of death, and forcing morality.
The meaning of life doesn't seem very complicated at all. How life got here is a much bigger question and is the reason God or Gods were conjured up to explain things people couldn't understand. Well we are no different from any other creature or plant or organism on the planet...which all has one meaning of life and thats to replicate ourselves to then die and go back into the cycle of life from which we came. The only thing we have over the other living beings is that we can just debate it.
I don't know my IQ and it probably isn't very high. I also don't consider IQ tests a very good representation of someones intelligence as the tests are culturally biased in many ways and makes about as much sense as religion. To be informed and educated about worldly topics and issues holds much more weight with me. Common sense matters over all.
I am just glad to live in the USA, land of the free....but that even seems to be more of a label than a reality. The world is changing in ways that keeps us all divided and that worries me for our generations of people to come. The major problems of the world revolve around Religion and resources. The world would be a better place without Religion.

Let me clarify, no one thing on Earth or in this elemental universe can tell me the meaning of life... Or at least not with much confidence. Believing that a higher being has a purpose for us seems more valid than that we are just a coincidence.

Hey BullFrog, are you saying you don't believe in God, or you don't believe that God can be proven? Or are you saying that you don't believe in religion? Agnosticism doesn't exactly mean you don't believe in God, only that you aren't certain that He exist. Your argument seems to be more against religion, and not so much against God. I see you as more of an Atheist than as an Agnostic. But I am just curious.
