What about a 4Q tourney, which you have to hit the other team with a certain type of offense in each quarter, but where each quarter is different? Teams would have a choice 4 different types of offenses and can use any of them in any quarter, but once you use one, it can't be reused the rest of the game.
For example, you have 4 types of offenses to pick from, you need to decide which quarter you want to use them in...
RB Outside Rushing only = any rushing plays that go outside the tackles.
RB Inside Rushing only = any rushing plays that go in between the tackles.
QB Rushing only = Any QB rushes, inside or outside.
Passing only = passes only.
A team might pick to pass in Q1, rush outside in Q2, rush inside in Q3, and QB rush in Q4.
This tourney would help those teams that are really balanced, both on offense and defense, and thus the teams that do well here will often be different from those in other tourneys where teams focus on one type of offense.
Thoughts?
I prefer the 1 play/quarter myself. I get what you're aiming for, but a team could run OT for one quarter, slams for another quarter, and then sneaks for a 3rd. Not only is that boring and offers little strategy, but once you mix in a quarter of passing, it's pretty much your standard gold game in the end...the plays are just grouped. Plus, defensively, you pretty much know what's coming, so everyone will just play a few good, balanced defenses. If you're only allowed 1 play/quarter you don't know if that's 4 inside plays, 4 outside plays, 4 passes, etc.
I like your iron man suggestion, but I think somebody would need to do a test game first. I'm not completely confident that a bunch of extra guys won't creep into the game somehow. If anybody is up for a test, I'm game!
