Scores used in a prediction are merely used represent the expected level of domination by one team or another, on both offense and defense, and are not indicative an actual score prediction. The closer a score is, the more likely it is the game will have a different winner each game if the game was played 100 times. The larger the score margin and proportional points discrepancy, the more likely it is that the same team would win nearly every time if the game were played 100 times.

It's a statistical guesstimation used by sports writers pretty much since the beginning of sports.
