Alright, now the fun begins...here's how I see the playoffs playing out...
Round I_____________________________________________________________________________
#1 Queensland Exiles (16-0) • vs • #8 Windsor Walruses (8-8)
Queensland should be riding a 36-game winning streak coming into this game after dispatching the North Delta Huskies in the regular season's final week. As dangerous as a #8 seed can be come playoff time, I just don't expect Windsor will have enough in their arsenal to pull it off. Queensland - 59, Windsor - 13
#2 Saskatoon Silverbacks (14-2) • vs • #7 Thunder Bay Wolverines (9-7)
Hmmm...who to believe? redrayder28 says, "We're not exactly happy to face Thunder Bay in the first round" while CoachCoughlin simultaneously utters, "Don't worry...the Wolverines don't usually show up for the playoffs." I think both of them are playing it a bit coy. Saskatoon isn't terribly worried, but Thunder Bay is going to give 110%. Their regular season game tipped in the Silverbacks favor, but it was close at 34-31. While the Wolverines ended strong, I'm expecting they'll have lost three of their last five and are looking at an early playoff exit. Saskatoon - 27, Thunder Bay - 24 (In Overtime)
#3 Moose Jaw Roughriders (14-2) • vs • #6 Winnipeg Warriors (11-5)
Winnipeg stunned Saskatoon back in Week 8; improving their record to 7-1 to start the season. However, they got hammered in losses to Queensland, St. John's, and Moose Jaw in the second half...by an average of almost 42 points. Meanwhile, the Roughriders have beaten every opponent by a solid margin since their narrow loss to Queensland, also in Week 8. I don't think this one will be close. Moose Jaw - 45, Winnipeg - 17
#4 Kansas City Gorillas (13-3) • vs • #5 St. John's Salty Dogs (11-5)
It's a toss-up, too close to call. History favors the Salty Dogs. This will be their sixth match-up with Kansas City winning each of their odd games (first, third, fifth) and St. John's taking the previous two even ones (second, fourth). Sorry, guys, this is my team...I won't pick for or against them.
Round II____________________________________________________________________________
#1 Queensland Exiles (17-0) • vs • #4 Kansas City Gorillas (14-3) or #5 St. John's Salty Dogs (12-5)
Since I couldn't pick a Round I winner between Kansas City & St. John's...I'll have to include both teams as a possibility here to face Queensland. The Exiles should now be winners of 37 consecutive contests, the new guys to CPL, facing off against two teams with a combined 10 seasons under their belts. There was an old guard in CPL that didn't even begin game-planning until the playoffs started. Is it possible either of these teams has been holding something back or are they starting to show their age? Sadly, I'm not sure either team can knock off Queensland. I won't offer a prediction other than to say the Exiles will be moving on.
#2 Saskatoon Silverbacks (15-2) • vs • #3 Moose Jaw Roughriders (15-2)
This game kind of takes on a "Who cares?!?" feeling for me. My team has either (a) lost to Kansas City in the first round or (b) just been eliminated by Queensland in the second. Why should I care about two newly promoted teams to CPL? I did appreciate how dimmy finster started out the season with his predictions, but they faded away rather quickly. Saskatoon got caught up in the unfortunate circumstances of "Banana Gate" with the Gorillas and the playoff seeding is entirely different if Kansas City had won that re-simmed game. Somebody kick me for thinking that way...this should be a great game between two great teams each with terrific coordinators. Unfortunately for Saskatoon, I think it's about who's hot at the right time and they're not going to face a Moose Jaw team that will only put 7 points on the board. Saskatoon - 17, Moose Jaw - 31
Round III___________________________________________________________________________
#1 Queensland Exiles (18-0) • vs • #3 Moose Jaw Roughriders (16-2)
In Week 8 Queensland trailed 13-24 headed into the fourth quarter before storming back with 13 unanswered points to take a 26-24 victory over Moose Jaw. The Roughriders will be riding high after knocking off a talented Silverbacks team and the Exiles have their trophy polish out in pursuit of 20-0 while telling everybody in the locker room to take this one game at a time. Surely this game couldn't produce the excitement of their last meeting's furious come-from-behind victory, could it? I think it could...only Moose Jaw's going to have to be the one to rally after Queensland takes the early lead. Too little, too late. Queensland - 34, Moose Jaw - 28
