I've been to Chicago (once), and went to what my friend who lived their told me was the best deep dish pizza place around. I had eaten many "deep dish" pizzas before, including the ones from pizza hut Rob mentioned, I'd even eaten stuff that claimed to be "Authentic Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza". Let me state categorically.. THEY LIE!
Real chicago deep dish pizza is so different than what the rest of the country calls deep dish pizza, its really not even the same food. It can't be served on a platter, or in a pizza box, for example -- it would fall apart; its served in something that looks a lot more like a big pie pan, only about twice as deep. Literally, 4-5 inch deep straight walled dish, a lot closer to being a "pot" than a pizza pan.
The stuff in it is not a pizza, its the consistency of pie (like, apple pie or cherry pie, thick and gooey), and the meat and cheese aren't toppings, they are literally like pie fillings. The closest thing I could compare it to is like a giant chicken pot pie, but with several pounds of pizza ingredients inside instead of chicken and veggies and such. You eat this with a spoon or knife and fork, there are no "pieces" to cut. Not a finger food at all.
It was the best "pizza" i've ever had (though nothing like any other pizza i've ever seen), and I've never found anything even remotely similar to it anywhere else but Chicago.

Yeah, deep dish is totally different from double deckers. I like sausage on my deep dish pizza and places like Lou Malnati's, Ginos East and Pizzeria Uno will use a layer of sausage about quarter of an inch think. I think Giordano's has the best personal sized deep dish. I need to have a road trip one of these days.

Redwin: I've never had Sammy's, I'll have to try it out when I'm down in Del Mar for opening day at the tracks next Wednesday. I'm up in southern OC and they don't seem to have any right there.

Giordano's !! That was the place I had the awesome deep dish! Thanks ShadowWolf, I was having a hell of a time remebering the name. Sausage is my fav pizza topping too, and I distinctly recall the thick layer of it. mmmm.. man I'm making myself hungry.
and yea, they have a Sammy's in La Jolla and one around Mission Valley, and I think one in Del Mar too, but those are the only ones I am familiar with. I live in San Diego myself... (Pacific Beach, more specifically) If you make it out to one, i highly recommend the bbq chicken pizza. its one of their best.

I've never eaten at Sammy's. There's one in Liberty Station, in Point Loma (SD) also, and I've managed to avoid it repeatedly. I'll have to try it.
Best deep dish I ever had wasn't THAT deep. But I did have to eat it with a fork and knife. It was at a place called Nello's in Mesa Arizona. I think THAT one is out of business now and they only operate in Scottsdale.
My true problem is Calzones. Does Sammy's do Calzones? Probably.

You can get Chicago Style pizza at BJ's pizza (deep dish). Obviously it's not right out of Chicago but I dig it. There's so many good pizza places around to be honest, I just love pizza in general and wish it were healthier so I could eat it more often.
