Now, I've been around since season one. I know the Aces. I joined them because I recognized the name and I wanted to play for a team with some history. I probably had 100 offers, some more lucrative.
Teams changing ownership and keeping the name is pretty common in sports. And sometimes people can't stand to see a new person running an old team, but teams like the Aces have built up fans and there are people who want to be part of a new tradition.
Here's some teams that kept the mascot: (I know the city switched. It's the name that stays the same.)
LA Dodgers - Brooklyn Dodgers (Trolley Dodgers)
San Fran Giants - NY Giants
LA Lakers - Minnesota Lakers (Land of 10,000 Lakes)
Utah Jazz - New Orleans Jazz (Utah Jazz - are you kidding me with that?)
Arizona Cardinals - St. Louis Cardinals
Oakland Raiders - Oakland, LA Raiders
New Orleans Hornets - Charlotte Hornets
The list goes on.
You switch names when you want to disassociate yourself with a tradition.
Tampa Bay Rays - Tampa Bay Devil Rays
OKC Thunder - Seattle Supersonics
Baltimore Ravens - Cleveland Browns.
Now, I haven't talked to flames and I don't know his opinion. But if it was my former team and I had to let it go for whatever reason, I'd be proud to see it return to glory and not be lost to GLB history. If this game is still here in 20 years, I want to see the Galaxy Aces in USA Pro schooling people.
My 2 cents.
