A World Cup has 32 teams and months of qualifying.

I like this idea, but it's essentially an overhyped mini-tournament.

ur just jealous that you are not good enough to be invited to this tourney

that's it

Yeah, but that's not actually possible within the game.

Honestly, this would be a very cool idea if he implemented the Pool system and just picked 4 really good teams from each region (that really wanted to be involved) before doing a single eliminiation tourney.

With all due respect to people posting about this not being a "true" World Cup, remember the first FIFA World Cup consisted of less than 32 teams (12 or 13 I believe) and it took time to grow into its current 32 team format.

The FIFA World Cup is a proven model and I view this Inaugural cup as being formatted after that model. GLB is in its early stages, and with only 8 pro leagues in its current format, the layout of this tournament allows for expansion and growth to fit GLB as it grows.

You can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. Given the choice between waiting around for everyone to agree on something huge and un-manageable, the idea needs to grow legs and evolve from some beginning. This is it, IMHO.

Besides, GLB World Cup is now patented and any use of that phrase outside of something positive is considered null and void.

..it's Season 5 and 8 pro leagues would've made it petty easy mathematically to make this a multi-tier thing.

The hard part might've been finding teams to sign up and take it seriously.

What you don't realize is this was in the planning stages very early in the season. The problem was with the way the scrimmages were set up earlier and not enough open dates to schedule the games. At that time is was impossible to even get an eight team single elim tourney scheduled. Once the new scrimmage dates were put into place, it was too late to make for a larger tournament.

As Kondor said, it's an Inaugural event, meaning it's in it's inception stage and certainly needs work on it to improve it. Just because it's S5 in GLB doesn't mean it's S5 for the World Cup. This idea was bantered around back in S1 and S2 as a possibility and it never occurred.

I started trying to organize this before Bort made his announcement this season that he is looking at the possibility of doing something like this. I'm glad to see he may do it, but it's been said before and never happened. My idea was to make it happen this season, whether it's limited or perfect is not the point. The point was to get the idea implemented and provide some entertainment for the GLB community. It should be something organized and implemented by GLB imo. I hope it happens. In the meantime we'll do the best we can with what we have to work with.

Thank you Kondor for your time and effort in writing up the announcement. And a huge thanks to all of the team owners involved in making this happen.

Glad to see the efforts of several Pro League champions to put together an inter-regional tournament is coming to some sort of fruition this season. Most observers probably won't appreciate just how hard it has been to convince championship teams to dedicate the time to compete outside their own regions, as well as put their reputations on the line in a tournament that offers no formal reward. There were still a couple of cases where other regional representatives were needed (for example, where defending Pro League champs have been gutted).

Thanks to all the those who are participating, and a special thanks to the guys who put in the time to organize it! I'm excited to see how this turns out and hope it becomes a continuing GLB tradition.

Meaningless without a real USA Pro rep IMO.

No disrespect to Hud or the Saints, but they are not the best team in USA Pro this season by any stretch of the imagination. They are 4-3 and one of those wins was on a fumble return for a TD on the last play of the game.

The playoffs are not even a certainty for them as they have 4 really tough opponents left.

Lame Canada and USA have to play each other in round 1.

Not really, since the USA rep is a mediocre team this season.

agreed. Its kinda hard to believe that anyone but SA or Canada will win in this field.

Even though I have players on Arctic Bay and fully expect to win it all, don't count out the 'Nites from Oceania Pro.
Sleep on them and they will make you pay.

World Cup. LOL. Lets think about this. This is based off of FOOTBALL. Yes so shouldnt this be the Goallineblitz Bowl or something??? I mean, ask most true Football fans about the World Cup and they could care less.

Anyone seen the commercial with the forum including Peyton Manning and the guy asks you do you mean football or soccer and Manning cracks up. Hilarious.
