I know this may sound funky, but should Obama win, I do think it will open the door for the best candidates to win in the future since that fear of "Oh noez a black! OMG a woman!" will be a little less there. Though, I don't think a non Christian will have a shot for a very long time, if ever.

This is potentially the only positive I see coming out of the Obama presidency. Well, that and increased respect internationally. But I think if we simmer down, fix our own economy and country and quit meddling in other countries, that would come with any president.

I don't even think he needs to necessarily get elected at this point for people to realize that there are more people than just white males that can run the country. He has a lot more supporters than he would have if he ran even 20 years ago, which shows how far we've come as a society as far as race relations are concerned.

I agree. It's a big step, but I hope people don't pat themselves on the back and convince themselves that racism is no longer a problem. It still exists outright in many parts of the south, and all over the country exists in the subconscious of whites imo. We can't use statistics or anecdotal evidence as rationalization to judge anybody of any color on an individual basis.

I'm all for having someone other than a white male in the White House... As long as Washington D.C. doesn't turn into Moscow in the process!

Well, and tbh, there are still several blacks with a huge chip on their shoulder who believe white people are racist without even getting to know them, which of course is racism it's self. I live in a pretty white heavy area, and while I know several awesome black people who don't even flinch when they hear the N word, there are more who give me dirty looks for no reason, call me white boy, think it's ok to make white jokes etc etc.

I usually just smile and let it slide, because I'm not sure letting them know that I feel that is contributing to racism will make for a good situation. So, I really do think that something like this helps with all of that. We are making lots of progress.

No question it goes both ways; a lot of blacks are racist against whites too. Probably just as many as whites against blacks. But, while I don't want to minimize it because racism is never NOT a big deal...blacks aren't typically in positions of power such that their racism can really prevent whites from moving up in society.

No doubt racism goes both ways. I don't like to note the type (white vs all, black vs all, etc) as it's all the same, and it's all stupid because none of us had anything to do with 'who we are.' However, I guess with our country's short and recent history, assuming it's white vs whomever isn't totally unexpected (not talking about you guys, just society in general).

Anyone who groups people into a category just based on skin color is doing so as a racist. I think that it is ignorant and disqualifies them as an intellectual. That goes to ALL people: White, Black, Yellow, Brown, Red, Orange, Purple, Carmel Mocha Latte with Cream... etc.

With that being said... That also goes for Barack Obama who labeled his own Grandmother a "Typical White Person."

I don't read too much into it, other than it's kinda sad he thinks of white ppl that way. I really do think we're getting better tbh.

Bottom line: Obama makes his supporters feel good about supporting him. McCain may have the resume and track record people can see, but he just doesn't make people feel good.

Reagan made people feel good.. his opponents did not (though, oddly, Jimmy Carter did when he won in 76.. but not in 80).

Even W made his supporters feel good with the Compassionate Conservative thing and No Child Left Behind.. and for re-election in how he handled 9-11 not pointing fingers at his predecessors.

It seems to me that elections are always won at this level by the guy that makes his supporters feel better about supporting him.
