Nice team you have there sips, it takes you 3 QBs and more trick plays to eek out a 1 point win at home. One of your WRs had 3x the passing yards as your starting QB

After 2 games, 15% of your passing yards have come from WRs

Longhorn Network, Third Tier Rights, the Business of College Football, and Delusion

The Ag on that thread cleared up a lot of that nonsense:

Originally posted by MoJames
Something that needs to be clear is that the Longhorn Network and ESPN bought the THIRD TIER RIGHTS from Texas, nothing more, nothing less.

This is not true. It is obvious from the released LHN contract that ESPN is also renting Texas's influence over the rest of the conference and the UIL. When you consider the fact that there are contract stipulations that clearly state that Texas is required to do its best (aka use its influence) to get another Texas football game and the high school championship game on the LHN, it is obvious that influence was part of what ESPN is paying for. We can't easily put a value to what Texas' affiliation to the UIL or its influence in the Big 12 was worth, but it is obvious that part of the compensation was for these things or it would have not been in the contract.

2. There is little discussion in the article of how ESPN used its first tier contract to give the LHN a game it would have never had. As far as I am concerned this was much worse than the high school game issue and was the best reason for A&M to leave.

Conference networks, as noted in the above write-up, were supposed to be limited to third tier inventory ONLY. ESPN and Texas used their influence to get around this by shifting a first tier game to the LHN to make the LHN more attractive to cable providers. ESPN traded worthwhile ABC game inventory for a game on the LHN that otherwise isn't worth broadcasting and bribed Fox to allow the game to be traded down to the third tier level.

This is a problem because it implies that the first tier exposure is no longer given to worthy teams as per the Big 12 contract- instead ESPN and Texas decides who gets exposure (and money). KU got a boost by signing on and someone else who would have played Texas on ABC instead of KU got cheated. This shows that ESPN is willing to use its first tier contract to boost one member's conference network without anyone else getting that advantage for their network. ESPN setup no apparatus or guidelines for other programs to put first tier games on their own network, which implies that the right are not owned equally (Texas gets preferential treatment).

Basically the LHN gave KU a way to screw a more worthy team out of their shot on ABC (possibly Texas Tech given the threats ESPN threw at them when they turned down the LHN deal), which destabilizes both the conference and its media contracts. KU (and every member of the conference) should have never been offered a game on the LHN, because first tier games should have never been dragged down to the LHN.

What makes this even worse is that the Big 12 payout is a merit system based on TV appearances. Now ESPN and the LHN can decide who gets paid for that one First Tier game when before the team most worthy got the exposure and the payment. This completely undermines the spirit of the Big 12 media agreement.

3. The write-up glosses over an important point on the high school game issue. The issue wasn't really the fact that the LHN was looking for filler. The issue was that once the NCAA ruled against high school games, ESPN immediately declared afterwards that it was gonna show high school "highlights" which prior to the NCAA ruling were never mentioned.

This shows that ESPN and the LHN are going to push the envelope as far as they can, and that when push comes to shove ESPN is more interested in following the lettering of the rules ("no high school games") rather than its spirit ("don't put high schoolers on a school network as that is an unfair recruiting advantage"). Other programs (rightly so I say) feel threatened that Texas and ESPN are going to maximize the potential of the LHN no matter what it does to the Big 12, competitive balance, or the NCAA's authority.

1. You don't have a number one. You're saying that Texas is required to "use its influence' to get another B12 game or HS championship on the LHN. All this means is that Texas has to say "hey put that here." No more and no less. If either of these games are played on the LHN, it's no different than a cable provider negotiating to get a game on their channel. This is capitalism. Love it or GTFO of America.

2. I really don't think you know what you're talking about. If a game is worthy of being on a major channel it will be regardless or what's on the LHN. First tier exposure is given to teams who will give ESPN the most viewership, regardless of who Texas plays. You're just making shit up at this point.

3. Dodds voted agains the LHN playing HS games. So did everyone else. This isn't an issue. HS highlights are shown on ESPN and basic cable. The LHN playing HS highlights is nothing different than what all local channels do ever week. FFS, ever Saturday before college football stars I watch a show about HS football. Complaining about the LHN showing HS football highlights is like complaining about the LHN showing a weather report. You're just a fool

Welp we are 2-0. So we've got that going for us. As well, we might be done with the GG experiment, something that should concern you. Oh and Brown looks like he might be a purty good RB.

The problem with that is that Connor Wood was the best QB on the roster and y'all ran him off. Brown did look pretty good, so maybe y'all will actually have a running game this season. Of course, with the way the passing game has gone teams may stack the box.

Connor Wood was behind Ash on the depth, so I'm pretty sure he wasn't the best QB on the roster. But then again I wasn't at the practices or in the team meeting room like you were so I wouldn't know what you know.

It would appear McCoy is the one. With the new OC and someone to actually direct things from behind center, the O could be formidable. Ocho is so good on D. The kind of player every coach wants, all over the field.

If memory serves me right, this the first time since late '90's that A&M has been picked to finish higher than the Horns. Is that correct?

Probably so. I expect it to stay that way for another decade or two.

Bold Prediction: The sips will be 5-6 going into the Baylor game. Here is how I see their schedule playing out:

@UCLA W
@Iowa State L
#1 Oklahoma L
#9 Oklahoma State L
Kansas W
Texas Tech W
@#21 Missouri L
Kansas State L
@#7 Texas A&M L
@ Baylor L

5-7 again.

No offense dude, but how else can we spell this out to you? How do you not understand what we are saying? I have come to the conclusion you are just pulling our chain to get a reaction or you are truly a delusional dumb---. Wake up already. I actually have Longhorn friends and they get it, sadly it is people like you who embarrass the vast majority of them.

This is such an embarrassing statement you should hang your head in shame in its pure dumbfuckery. Basic cable, major networks, local TV news, MTV, ect ARE NOT PARTNERED WITH A SCHOOL. Even NBC being partnered with ND doesn't influence potential recruits like TLN would because they don't have a national show of any type discussing ND or their potential recruits. They show their football game, and that is it. No highlights other than local HS teams with UNBIASED reporting. No influence. Nothing, nana, NIL! Texas telling a recruit, sign with us, and we will star you on our network (live games, highlights, or whatever) and if you don't sign with us, we will find another kid to showcase isn't like anything you watch on Saturday morning. ESPN showing HS basketball games isn't sitting their saying we are only showing this because this kid is going to Duke, NC, or where ever. They are showing it because they are top end talent that may pull viewers. Sadly, them being aligned with the failing LN is a problem, because I wouldn't be surprised that they will show more HS football games and basketball games of Texas commits without ever mentioning where they are going. You can run around with blinders on and believe what ever you want, but this is a problem and I hope Joe Castiglione has enough intestinal fortitude to say enough is enough and TLN crumbles.

I would say 10-2 with them going 2-2 vs the two Okies, A&M, and Baylor.
Whatever the case, 5-7 is silly...

The sips have shown nothing to think that will happen. I will give them UCLA just because they suck worse this year than last year. Iowa St. is on the road and they have been fairly impressive. Okie and Okie lite will pound them. Kansas is a win at home, I give them tech because they have owned them. They lose a close one on the road at Missou, K-State owns the sips and this year will be no different, and we win by 3 scores in Austin. I give Baylor the nod unless RG3 goes down, in which case they will uptick to 6-6.
