In college, you have limited time to interact with the players because they are also students. You can't expect kids to digest the game 8+ hours per day. NCAA rules won't even allow for it. That's probably the biggest factor. Additionally, some coaches have a hard time adjusting to the recruiting process and a limited staff.
Additionally, you are dealing with KIDS - not paid professionals. Some coaches never get it ... Weis, Callahan, Groh, etc. OTOH, you've got guys like Pete Carroll who clearly connect with the kids and despite mediocrity as an NFL head coach, he's one of the top coaches in CFB over the past decade.
