In regards to Asomugha, that was 1 season. During his other 5 seasons in the NFL he has only made 2 INTs. He may have made more tackles in 2006, but he also made considerably more tackles on pass plays.that's not true, nor should it be. you don't give up the chance for a pick because it's 3rd down - field position. even on 4th, you better be damn sure that ball is gonna hit the ground and not some receivers hands when you knock it down (even then, some guys make mistakes and catch it anyway). even if you did, you still go for the pick on downs 1-3 which is when 95% of non-special teams plays are.
i'm not suggesting a CB should play like asante samuel and abandon his coverage in the hopes for a pick all of the time...but even though asante does that constantly, he's still a pretty successful CB because he gets the ball (despite me hoping he never plays for my team).
An int attempt is 9 times of 10 (probably more) gonna be a PD anyway...so why not try to catch the ball? If you think that because a CB has high catching he's gonna try and catch everything and blow coverage...then don't do that. either way, you'll probably have a decent CB if you don't screw up speed/agi/vision, so at that point it doesn't matter a ton imo. i would say the evidence i've seen supports jumping being overrated and catching being underrated, by and large. both probably doesn't hurt

i guess my main issue here isn't really with what you are saying, but with the GLB-wide and fan-wide philosophy on cornerbacks. the f'd up thing is, a ton of people who played football and have watched it their whole lives still don't get it. makes me sad

if you REALLY wanna talk about how real corners play that's cool, i'd PM you with that it's always interesting

, particularly regarding asomugha cause i like him a lot. he's a great cover corner now, wasn't as good when he first entered the league, but he's always been an all-around corner.
