That's kind of how the gaming industry has gotten by for the past two decades.

I mean, I'm fairly certain that Activision isn't still working surviving off of making slight tweaks to the original Call of Duty every few months.

Did it take activision 5 years to make the game almost playable after release? Or was it playable after release/a couple patches?

Consumer confidence indexes are dying to know.

To be frank, if people are going to use that argument, they should compare GLB to other MMOs.

How many years was it from everquest 1 to 2? How many years from lineage 1 to 2? Guild wars 1 to 2?

L2 and WoW have been going for 9+ and 8 years so far without a single announcement of a sequel. It's very uncommon for a mmorpg company to cannibalize its own userbase by launching another game of the same style. This is not a single player final fantasy or halo game. It's multiplayer, and that is where it thrives, and this kind of games in particular have a totally different dynamic.

WoW releases expansion packs every few years, which cannibalize their old content.

And I mean, it's not like you can make expansion packs for football, unless they are playing on the moon with pandas or something, and I'm guessing that would turn off even more people.

Alternatively, the userbase stays the same and doesn't lose anything for going to the "new" football game.

Oh, and it was 5 years between the releases of EQ and EQ2.

And, coincidentally, 5 years between Lineage and Lineage 2.

So football on the moon with pandas? Sounds legit.

We could compare it to a relatively similar browser based MMO.

Evony was released in 2009.
Evony 2 was announced and started open testing in 2010

Warhammer Online is actually just shutting the doors after 5 years.

No new game, no expansion, just closing shop.

"18 million players"

Sounds like it's better than GLB.

I remember beta testing "The Realm" in 1995. It is still going strong, 17 years after itīs official release in 1996.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Realm_Online

It is so old that the term MMORPG hadnīt caught on and it was still called a MUD (Multi User Dungeon)
