The reason the game was so egalitarian in those early seasons was that everyone was within 2 seasons of each other.

I didn't play in s1 or even early in s2. My first real wave of dots was s4d0, but even though we were behind the others in terms of age it was still lots of fun because different teams had distinct identities, the personalities of various agents were huge, and even the regions battled each other. A lot of that has been homogenized, and while some of it is due to networks (I hate Sofia having its new stupid name or The Globedotters: Insert Team Here), a lot of it wasn't. Regardless, my point was simply that I don't think there is any basis whatsoever to say that networks currently "make the game" as Toric claimed.

I would argue that networks were inevitable based on fundamental flaws in the way the league system and several age features were set up.

It's definitely something people saw coming, I agree. At one point it appeared as if Bort was considering whether or not to allow them. I don't know if he decided in the affirmative or simply judged it to be too difficult to police. Both might be true, as I can't see how you could forbid people to operate the way that networks do.

jd, I assume your main point is more about the "hoarding of resources" rather than the networks themselves...

For example VDA, we only have 4 (technically 2) teams "at the top" and if we cant find a spot we generally ask them to go find a good home and if we come calling the next season we ask for the "trump card" so to speak.....but in no way would we house them on a reg pro team.....

I'm guessing that's what you are getting at?

Also keep in mind 1 of our top 2 teams is owned by Cow, so it's really like 1.5 teams at the top

Networks in general annoy me for a variety of reasons, but your point that they don't all act the same way is well taken.

It will never happen, but the only real way to do away with groups/networks/coalitions/whatever is to have a draft type settup.

We all know that it will never happen, so even if GLB tried taking a stand against networks (past or present) their hands were tied because you can't stop a group of guys from helping each other out.

Those that claim to not be a part of an official network are still a part of a group of some sort..... it's called "networking"

Networks are bad for GLB but they aren't going anywhere. We are past that point now. Networks should have been shot in the ass right from the beginning but no one did anything because Bort catered to the elite people of the game and what they wanted. Bort said no collusion but farm teams are perfectly acceptable. At least Farm teams are making an effort to win now as compared to 10-15 seasons ago. Basically we let it go on for so long that now even if we wanted to do something about it, it would just end up hurting the game

By not letting Hali do what they did way back when. When they got away with the merging the two teams in WL everyone said fuck it if we want to compete we have to do the same thing
