Downside: Forcing people who don't like avys with breasts to turn off avatars, leading to them not seeing
Upside: Not making others feel like they are on a site built for elementary school age kids
I've never posted or felt the need to post a racy avatar. It doesn't bother me that others do and I don't feel the need to tell them what to post to build their "online identity", which is really what avys are all about. If someone wants to draw the line at pornographic images, sure. But Smiling Assassin's old avy of a woman sucking a banana was funny and you immediately knew who was talking, because his online visual identity was built around it. Provide an opportunity for expression through avys but then limit the ability to use them (beyond obviously pornographic ones) and people tend to clam up in the forums, get bored, then leave. SA used to have awesome write-ups and forum enforcement (including avy enforcement) is one of the things that lead to his disinterest in the game.
People come here to relax and blow off steam. I say let em.
