a lot of people seem to think that you need a good amount of confidence for these SA's to work. What is this popular wisdom based on? A bunch of hearsay and forum wildfire or is there any tangible evidence for the SA benefits of confidence?

Hearsay. Unless the SA says "Higher confidence to work more effectively" than its just the SA itself. Perhaps I am wrong, and if I am, I would like a link to a Bort posting that says contrary.

I agree. Unless the SA specifically mentions a skill or attribute, i think it doesn't relate to one. Like the linebacker or lineman general ability.

I don't think it's linked to the SAs, but confidence really helped my LB ever since I started training it. It's worth training.
