Gotham (AP) -- Before the season started, many criticized Dave Sack for his bold claims that the Punishers would improve dramatically in their sophomore season.
After improving 5 games over the season to finish 9-7 and earn their first franchise playoff birth, many fans in Gotham and in the area are buying in to the Punisher Promise. Several key players were added in the off-season, among them Harley Petit, who lead the team with 9 TD receptions in the season. After a first week loss to the powerful Minnesota Lumberjacks, the coaches of Gotham acquired Quarterback Andrew Hatch, who passed for a franchise record 1,995 yards, and 16 Touchdowns. Hatch split time with incumbent Rico Dyanmite, who threw an additional 1173 yards and 5 Touchdowns.
The club's running back Baby Carrot expanded on last year, rushing for nearly 900 yards, and totaling 5 Touchdowns on the year. Backup Kenny Mayne eclipsed 450 yards on the season and also reached the endzone 5 times.
Possibly the most talented area on the team are the receivers and tight ends. While his productivity dropped off tremendously from last year, Dan Miller still lead the team in receptions and yards (69 and 767). Brandon Lafell, who was traded to the team early on along with Andrew Hatch, totaled over 500 receiving yards on the year, while Andy Bailey went over 550 yards and caught 5 Touchdowns as well. Astoundingly, Bailey had more yards on punt return than he did receiving, averaging almost 17 yards per return.
The unsung heroes of this offense is the offensive line, lead by Franken Berry and Brad Solmes. Franken Berry played an astonishing 1000+ plays this year, and consistently flattened defenders to lead the team in pancake blocks.
The Punishers Defense, aptly named "The Legion of Doom", consistently returned the ball to their offense, with at least 5 players with 4 interceptions or more, with Terrence Lockdon accruing an amazing 8 picks himself. Jacob Samuels also added to the turnover count, taking 4 interceptions and picking up 2 fumbles on the defense.
The special teamers of any team are often overlooked, but we will examine them. Punter Remy LeBeau booted 102 punts this year, averaging an impressive 33.3 yards for each punt. Modest McDaniel contributed 104 points to the offensive campaign as a kicker, with an accuracy of 73% from Field Goal range.
Overall the Gotham City Punishers are a loaded team with talent, and look forward to another playoff year in Season 4.
