Hamburg Wins 17-14

Whispers of Controversy?

On the eve of the last game of the season, the mood among the Hamburg GrimKnights is one of reflection and determination. Many of the players are new to the team but the ones who have been around the longest have seen incredible growth in talent and success.

Said GM LRAts “It was a rough start, losing two of our first three games, since me and Njkidd took over, but it's really good to see the team finally come together and play well”. After starting the season 5-6, the team has been on a 4 game winning streak capped by an absolute nail-biter against the Glasgow Dream. "This win is very important, not only to secure a better spot in the playoffs, but to get much needed momentum going into them.”

The game Wednesday morning was a great example of the tremendous growth we have seen over the last 9 weeks. In a game where almost nothing was going right some key last minute pickups by the front office were able to pull it together for a win. Newly signed QB Marion Timpson played well in a relief effort going 3/5 and throwing the game winning touchdown to also newly acquired WR Demarcus Mcfadden with 2:41 left on the game clock. Although the run game continued to be a strong point for the GrimKnights, starting quarterback Charlie Pace struggled going 11/31 with 1 touchdown and an interception that was taken to the house by Dream CB Lance Zimmerman.

When asked about his performance Pace sounded very disappointed saying “It wasn't my greatest game, to be honest I was weak against the Glasgow Dream, but we dominate on rushing and won the game as a team. I hope to perform better next game, the next game will be tough but I hope we will perform as expected and reach the playoffs.”

To be fair to Pace, 4 of his passes were dropped with 2 of those drops happening on 3rd down. Another drive came to a halt on a drop by Matthew Tomaszeski on a wide open pass from Timpson. Many receivers are taking responsibility for the poor passing game. Said newcomer Demarcus Mcfadden, “You really hate to be the one who lets the team down like that; it is the quarterback’s job to get you the ball and when he does you want to take advantage of that opportunity. The WR’s group as a whole are gonna go back to the basics and make sure that we make our QB look good out there. He should be able to throw a ball into one-on-one coverage and have confidence that we will come down with it. We just left a lot of yards on the field.”

There are whispers in the locker room about a possible QB controversy going into the playoffs. Pace didn’t play his best and Timpson looked very crisp for the little time he was in. When asked about his feelings on the matter, Timpson wouldn’t say much. “This is a team. Everyone has their responsibilities and hopefully we do our best to not let each other down. I am excited about the win but Pace is the leader of this offense. The guys respect him as such. We don’t always play our best game and I am glad that I could come in and help out while Charles was struggling. I am not saying I don’t want to play cause I do; that is why I am here. It is what I get paid to do. But Pace has a lot of experience with this group. The front office does a good job of putting us in position to win and we will if we all work together.”

The GrimKnights will be looking forward to another must win Friday morning against the European ZoneBoys. A win here will cement there playoff hopes. The locker-room is highly optimistic that they will be victorious in their last regular season home game. “Its been fun winning four games in a row, especially because the defense is playing so well. We got a talented group of guys here and we're all itching to make some noise in the playoffs. I know we're gunna play our hearts out, and hopefully go all the way and win the championship." – LB Andrew Tomas.

Perhaps the coach put it best in explaining the exciting growth and dedication of our Hamburg GrimKnights over the last 9 weeks. “Here in Hamburg we started out slow and well we were at five hundred about half way through the season. After new ownership had taken over, they made over 20-30 moves and well quite frankly they have all been tremendous improvements to this team. The team really just started clicking and after the last huge win in the last few minutes of this game it seems like we're really coming along. I am proud of our players and their dedication.”

Go GrimKnights,
