Is this normal?

Are there certain plays/blitzes that makes my DE drop back in coverage?

Looks like a zone blitz.

De do that very (that is an understatement) often in this game.

He got a deflection on the first play and made the tackle on the last two, there's nothing wrong with that. My RDE (the "pass rusher") does that sometimes even when the CB is covering the WR.

Some plays drop DEs into zone coverage.

it almost looks like he's reading the play and going after where the ball is going to go. "Following the QBs eyes" so to speak.

with enough vision and setting the "Read" to balanced, he'll drop back on running plays and lb blitz, and rush on all others (from what i've seen)

I'll try setting D focus to run, and maybe that will help a bit. But it does look like I drop back when it is a zone blitz.

It's a zone coverage. It has nothing to do with your personal settings, and no it has nothing to do with the DE "reading" the play. He's just running the play that he was given. The Panthers tried this a lot with Julius Peppers last season which is one of the reasons he had a bad year, but that's a topic for another day.

You can ask your DC to turn down your % of zone coverage, but even if you try to force the sim to go 100% man coverage it will still run some zone plays.

Good quote there.

Your D coordinator isn't any good that's why that's happened. I hate to say that.

King, his DE is on a d-league team, so computer is d coordinator. To answer OP question, it is because you are playing zone coverage.
