I've been e-mailed a lot this season and I rarely get a chance to get back to anybody, so I just figured I'd post something up to help. I'm not the best at building a DE by any means, and I know that my stats come partially from playing gutted teams and not being on a USA pro team; however, I also know I don't have a BAD build by any means. I figured I'd share some of the things I've done in case anybody needs help.
Importance of Strength
This was my first DE build in GLB, and I guess I got lucky. I just did what made sense. You have to know your enemy with anything, and in this case a DE is going up against an OT. So...what makes an OT great? Strength and blocking. So knowing that off the bat, you need to get that strength up asap. Like, first thing you need to be doing is strength and stamina (for snaps). Two things I see a lot of people doing is wasting their SPs on Tackling and the skill tree. The skill tree isn't going to work if you don't have the skills to go behind it. You shouldn't even be worrying about your Tree until lvl 8 honeslty. So yeah, strength strength strength all day until the soft cap is over. By LVL 8 you need to buy some custom equipment and put either all 6 on strength or 3 strength/3 agility or 2/strength/2 agility/2 speed - NOTHING ELSE. This is where you can start feeding your tree. Get 1s all the way across except the Big Sack, that can come later. So you should be spending 4 points on your Pass Rusher Tree, then you should be using your custom equipment to boost your Containment (Run Stuffer) tree. I don't care if you're a pass rusher or not, the containment tree will help you immensely.
Goal by LVL20 - Strength in the 65-70 range; no more than 3's across Pass Rush Tree; 1's across Containment Abilities
Speed/Agility kills
Once you finish getting your strength up, you can tend to it still but start moving your SPs around a little more. This is where I started building my speed. Agility came last for me, but either is fine to start with. You need a good balance there. I don't want to encourage you to completely neglect Strength at this point because you have to figure that while your LVLing so is the rest of the league, including the OTs. With that being said, they are getting stronger and you're just getting faster. Find a balance there. Speed is so neglected, and that's why you see so many hurries and not enough sacks. It's frustrating, but if you add to speed you'll not only be able to execute but you'll find yourself racking up tackles and INTs (sometimes for scores) that you normally wouldn't have gotten. Agility is great, too, because it enables your DE to just break off of a block, get away from a lineman, and hit the edge with percision.
Goal by LVL20 - Speed AND Agility in the 45-50 range
What about tackling?
Your strength will help you tackle. You can train tackling, but I wouldn't recommend spending SPs on it. 25-30 is plenty for a DE. If you think you're going to get bowled over you can always change your advanced tactics to "wrap up" tackling, but a QB isn't going to shake you off when you go to bust him up.
Goal by LVL20 - Tackling in the 25-30 range
Vision
You've got to have good vision to know what the play is going to be. If it's a run play you want to be able to wrap the tackle up or go for the fumble. You've got to see that coming so it makes it easier for your LBs and safeties. Shutting plays down in the backfield is just as important to your team as bringing down the QB. Vision also seems to assist in finding holes and keeping with speedy, agile backs. You'll see a definite increase in productivity from your player with strong vision.
Goal by LVL20 - Vision in the 25-30 range
Blocking
I've never spent a single SP on blocking, but I do train on it frequently. I recommend doing it because it's an easy thing to bump on relaxed days. It apparently helps you shed blocks and you may even see a few snaps on the o-line. I've gotten a few pancakes this season, but as far as it making you a better pass rusher I'd believe it. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but do it anyway.
Goal by LVL20 - Blocking @ a "comfortable" 20
Always play on HARD, never use any of your equipment for anything other than Agility, Speed, or (most importantly) Strength, and forget about them stopping you. I hope this helps.
