All positions work fine with 3 or 4 pieces

Returners and WR seem to have more people using 4

0, 1 and 2 AE dots are never a good plan

Hmmm, I've always assumed this as well however I honestly think you could do fine by making a 2 AEQ O-lineman or BTE simply because u really can just double up on HB% gear and use custom for HB% (triple). TE I can see the argument for 3 to pickup pancake SA but then u can just go double HB% with custom and 1 norm piece. Not sure if it is worth it but those positions seem the best positioned to make do with it if I was going to

most 2 AE dots I see end up with the same EL as a 3 AE dot - so maybe it is a function of those people not knowing how to build

if you are going to end up with a 1450-1500 EL for a 4 major dot, you might as well go 3 AE
