I have built a fast safety. I built him to run down players. Unfortunately, too often he catches the player and then whiffs a diving tackle when in another step or two, he would have just made a normal tackle.

I wish that the game gave the player the option of the criteria when to make a diving tackle.

adding jumping and diving tackles SA defeats the purpose of the player. he's one of the stops on one of my teams, and we dont want him wasting points on those when he can run down just about any one. the point is that why should a player dive at a tackle when he is outrunning the ball carrier? diving tackles should be last resort.

It kinda depends on how GLB set things up, guppy. If they have diving tackle as a BONUS to making a tackle when a normal tackle doesn't work (as in a normal tackle fails so then a Diving tackle is attempted), then what the OP is asking for would be a detriment rather than a help. If it's simply a coin flip play (in other words it's totally pure chance as to which type of tackle is attempted), then the suggestion has merit.
Also, a diving tackle might simply be the ONLY play the dot can make (in other words, the dot is too far away to attempt a normal tackle... therefore a diving tackle is the only option to the dot to make a play). Again, the suggestion has merit but only if it fits the coding that GLB uses. Otherwise, it's a detriment.

I think what they are talking about is a situation like this:

-Tackler is chasing the ball carrier and is out of tackle range
-A tick occurs where the tackler is in range of a diving tackle, but not a normal tackle

Currently the game attempts the diving tackle at this point, when in another tick or two the tackler might be within normal tackle range. What they are asking for is a tactic option that would allow the agent to decide how aggressive to be with diving tackles... perhaps 4 options

-Always attempt a diving tackle if in range
-Attempt diving tackles to prevent first downs, or if unable to catch up
-Only attempt a diving tackle if you don't think you will catch up
-Attempt diving tackles only near the goalline

Now that might work. Good to know I was somewhat close with my thoughts. Still, as much as I hate to say it that means more coding to the game and I'm pretty sure GLB has no further interest in doing any work of that nature here. If it was a bug, maybe... but it's not.

this. the game doesn't distinguish between a runner that is being chased down, and a runner that is pulling away. in general, the game lacks situational awareness.
