I noticed my free players aren't gaining any XP once they hit level 70.

You've hit the rolling cap and need to boost them.

And it has nothing to do with free players ^^^^ this applies to all players.

boost to 73 after rollover to next season then 6 more times on day 1 to get to 79

Just make sure that you boost to level 73 before day 1 or you will only be able to get your player to level 76
