Retire and restart.

Luckily you came back around the right time, anywhere between Day 40-48 you can recreate and still get the same amount of TPs and whatnot.

The best way to tell- do the math on their attributes, for example, Griffin has STR of 77.83(Attributes)-45.87(Penalties)=31.96.

Considering the age caps for many leagues, the players simply can't keep up with any league they're eligible to play in.

You can do that, but an even easier way to tell:

Look at your dots EL (the red number beside your level) http://i.imgur.com/KQlMkRH.png
If it's significantly lower than your actual level it may be a good idea to retire.

Since there is a possibility they may have the X-Factor, I would roll with them for a few seasons and see what happens.
