How much Throwing does a QB (Scrambler) needs for being able to throw good screen passes? And how much Catching should a HB/FB have to catch screens?

From my understanding you can catch screens even with 10 Catching, but the dot will take too long to catch the ball and start running.

A HB on my team has 36 catching and still drops screens sometimes.

I throw to 20 catching HBs all the time with a high-passing QB and zero drops.

Something like 48 throwing-48 catching would be safe imho. not that hard to throw screens.

The shorter (in distance) a pass has to travel, the less severe the penalties are against the possibility of completion. Correspondingly, you should build your QB (and HB) based on what you (or your OC) is going to use him for. If your scrambler ONLY will throw screens, he won't need much passing... but you'll surely be tagged like a (insert appropriate expletive here) and it'll be harder to succeed against a real good DC. Diversity is the blessing of all.

Thanks for the input. 48/48 is pretty much what I had in mind. I think it won't be hard to go higher than that for the QB, even if he is built to focus on the running game.

Yeah. Diversity is a very important factor. The problem is building a QB to be elite in both passing and running. Maybe some of the good dot builders around here could manage to do so, but me? lol, I wish!
So that's pretty much my idea, building a scrambler QB focused almost 100% in running, but throwing some screens here and there to make him not so uni-dimensional, and maybe catch a D off guard.

You gotta make it so your QB can complete some short slants and stuff over the middle, or like Theo pointed out he'll get shut down by any decent DC pretty easily.

That actually works but the main KEY to that being successful is having a very good OC who knows never to put your running QB in plays where he might try to throw medium or long passes. There are plenty of short pass plays you can use with a rushing QB. Plays you wanna avoid are OUT routes (too easy to get picked by the DB's undercutting the route with a QB whose pass quality is lacking). Screens, slants, IN routes, quick crossing routes... TE flats... that kinds stuff where your rushing QB can use his short range arm with success... and, also, if set to scramble on those types of passing plays, he can still be able to "dump off" without trying to make long passes after the play breaks down. This "helps" keep the defense a "little" honest... they can't simply sell out 100% against the run or they risk getting burnt.

The problem is that the DC's will stack the outside as soon as the scrambling QB is on the field to prevent being burned when he takes off outside. Throwing a screen is like throwing the ball right into coverage.

This is the solution -> You need to throw short passes through the middle

That's why you build a QB who runs up the gut.

Which is a good idea, really. I only built one Rushing QB but it really worked well when I stopped trying to make him a passer and basically made him a HB that wore a QB's jersey. Passing was addressed really late in the build so he could, at the very least, chuck some shorties.
