Does First Step SA get a Blocking FB to his target more quickly while run blocking or is the speed pre-programmed?

It is not pre-programmed. First Step is almost a must have for a FB so he can get to the outside before the HB.

Well that's what I've always thought and I've always used it on multiple generations of FB's but then again, I once thought First Step was useful for rushing HB's

Wonder if it might be handy for QB's as well to help them drop back more quickly? I know pulling linemen use it (I do) so I completely agree with whodey. And I understand why it wouldn't be such a hot item for HB's as they have to wait until they're handed the ball first. Now... having it on a HB who you use in the Wildcat formations... that'd be good I think.

Since most HBs stop when they get the screen pass, First Step will often active on screens after they catch the ball.

Even after receiving the handoff it won't kick in because the HB never stops or slows down to the point that would allow First Step to kick in. First Step is truly only worth it for a HB if he is used in the passing game enough to warrant the investment.

That's kinda what I meant. Just not worded very well on my part.
I know which dots I use it on, but I haven't built every kind of dot (yet) so there's some unknowns for me out there. It works pretty good for O-linemen ans STOPS... even tried it on a returner with some success. As far as using it in the passing game, don't you usually want your receivers to NOT stop when catching the ball (good reason to get Catch In Stride) and wouldn't that be counter intuitive?

For a WR First Step helps him get off the line quickly and get into his route which helps against defenses who bring quick pressure to the QB. There are times like curl routes or whatever where the WR simply has to stop in order to catch the ball and first step can help him get going again obviously. You get a fast WR with first step who sprints off the line and then does a quick catch fake or head fake or juke on the CB and he gets open real quick
