With the new 5-2 could it be possible to allow DE to be in man coverage along with zone.
Forum > Suggestions > 5-2 Defense
Some DE's can man cover some TE's, for sure... or even some Scat FB's in a limited time frame. Wouldn't do it often... or against some receivers... but it could be used if you want to send the CB on a blitz and still cover the FB in the flat... or the TE off the edge.

You know, they make these crazy things called linebackers, that are better suited for covering running backs and/or TEs. If you want your 5-2 DEs to play in man coverage, use the 3-4 with your OLB playing the part of the DEs.

So do I. Outside runs to the right side are gonna be EPIC for my teams against 4-4 Big defensive plays!
...oh. Oh, wait. You mean you love it as a DC.
I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry.

Use a 3-4 if you want coverage

+1 only because I think DCs should at least have the option of doing just about anything they'd like to try.
right now you can have your NT drop into zone coverage, which is probably less advisable than using a DE M2M vs a TE, so why not?
I do like the new 5-2... i'd given up on using LBs at all but this changes a lot.

I won't deny this is probably better... but do it all the time and you become very predictable to gameplan against. All the OP is asking for is some ability for variations of the 52 defense... not other defenses... so that's why I support his suggestion. If he wants to use his DE's in the flat or covering a TE, then he should have the option, at least. If others choose not to ever use it, fine. There's plenty of "setups" that DC's don't use when making up their gameplans.

No I dont want to change a Defense that I want to work with.
Why add new things if they are just limited to default stuff.
IF YOU DONT WANT TO USE IT THEN DONT CLICK IT IT"S THAT SIMPLE>>>

if you knew much about football, you would kno that even in the NFL,
some 4-3 teams occasionally have their DE cover a back or TE
now in the NCAA and HS, its extremely common.
thats one reason so many college 4-3 DEs become pro outside linebackers
