Is zone coverage ever workable or preferred? At what level do you think it can start working? Do you build your zone guys much different than man guys? I would think more vision and agility and maybe a bit less speed..but thats logic talkin...thoughts?

your question is vague...if by workable and preferred you mean cover 2 it is actually pretty much a necessity at any level.
Depends on personnel and build quality imo, if you have quality zone focused dots, it can work.

Workable..means used as a primary defense..either a true zone..or a man cover 2 type set up.. I was curious what level it has a chance of being effective..doubt rookie would work very well...for example

this works at every level...however you need to position your dots correctly...i cant say i have not nearly the time to work rookie level and i get worked....but semi pro level the defenses i use might start working correctly...this is different among other teams as people know what to do with those dots...so i dont know...ask people who constantly have succession in lower leagues what they do...because i can tell you it isn't have WL caliber dots.

Vague question is vague.
If you're intending to use a full zone in place of man-to-man, good luck. You're going to have a helluva time making that work. I'm sure somebody somewhere on here has figured it out, but for every one of them, there's a hundred DCs trying to use zones like this and failing miserably.
If you're intending to use zone to supplement man-to-man, absolutely, it works. Good way of making sure that a receiver only gets doubled or tripled if he's streaking long, or other situations where you want someone to be doubled only if they're running a particular route. Cover-2, Cover-3, Cover-1, etc.
If you're intending to use zone as a creative method of stopping the run, sure, it can work, but be careful with it.

zones start to work when dots have vision. Cover 2 3 and 4 all works if done properly. using the shallow/normal/deep settings do a LOT more than you think.
I've used zones to have 2 dots cover 3 many times for blitzing purposes and it's very possible. EEA is building dots for a full zone defense. http://goallineblitz.com/game/roster.pl?team_id=2826
You need to play with it though.

I agree. Most people use a "simi-zone" like cover 2 because getting the placement right is UBER key to making a complete zone work. If you have any holes, your opponents will find them. And Bug03 has a good point as well. Great zones probably work best with quality vision across the board (meaning all players IN the zone need very good vision). Mediocre vision will result in late breaks, fakeouts, and bad decisions by the zone dots.

zones prolly work better at lower levels in the first season ...man coverage doesn't start to work effectively until later on in the season

I use a lot of zone, (25% of my total D maybe), sucks at lower levels. Not just man to man with a safety or extra CB in zones, but with the zone being primary and in a few situations, everyone in zone. Really sucks eggs at lower levels. It's kind of entertaining seeing the difference as the dots age.
