how useful is it and would you take it over Ball Hawk for SS?

I personally would not take it over ball hawk, but it depends on how the SS is used by your DC too. If the DC plays the SS in a lot of m2m than Ball Hawk won't do much good. If he will be in zone a lot, Ball Hawk is a huge bonus.

Lots of differing opinions on Sure Tackler VA along with many of the re-roll VA options.

Yeah, has a lot to do with the build and what you are trying to do with it. It's an absolute necessity for my SS STOP.

It's also very good at lower levels (and obviously when the dot does not yet have the 40 in jump to get BH)
So in early seasons I would say its better, later in career BH trumps it (providing the SS plays a lot of zone)

my SS is a hard hitting safety with 8 FF on the season.. but i am not sure if i noticed much change with Sure Tackler... on paper it seems good

Sounds like you built, by design, a safety that is better at run support than pass coverage. Not saying this is bad... just saying that Sure Tackler is a good VA for such a design. I also prefer Ball Hawk over Sure Tackler for my safeties but I've never built a HH style safety... always Zone specialists. Still, DubJ is 100% correct... STOP safeties should have Sure Tackler and if your safety is playing any on ST's, it's a very good VA to have.
