They are overblown, and work more than they should.

Most of the time it is due to the HB countering way too slow which draws the Defense into the LOS where they get flattened. All this before the HB gets 1 yard downfield.

If you make the HB go slow on counter then let the D have time to recognize it too.

Or just get rid of the damn plays.

Meh, counters are pretty high risk/reward. For every 80+ yard TD I've scored with them there have been numerous times where the HB was dropped for no gain or a loss.

they are actually awful play calls in the older leagues.

Yeah with as many steps as they go in one direction, the line has already engaged, and the LBers and safeties have already anticipated the holes, the cut back is too late, and bam! Tackle for loss.

Counters are beatable. Problem is, the defensive tricks that stop counters make you vulnerable to other sorts of plays.

But y'know what? The defensive tricks that stop inside runs also make you vulnerable to other sorts of plays. So do the defensive tricks that stop outside runs. So do the defensive tricks that stop screens. And the ones that stop short passes. And the ones that stop long passes. Welcome to running a defense.

Counters aren't overpowered. You just haven't figured out how to stop them yet.

Actually thought this was about fixing counters to work more, but since this is to get counters nerfed

Screen passes are already leading this category

This.

At lower levels though where vision checks blown is the norm, those suckers will torment a defense.

I have tried lots but the D just seems to run into the line no matter what, did some changes today too so see what that does

I repeat: counters aren't overpowered. You just haven't figured out how to stop them yet.

As unsuccessful as they typically are (even at the lowest levels) I have never bothered even trying to stop them.

Y'have to think outside the box, and it will probably leave you vulnerable to other types of plays. But counters are stoppable at any level.

meh, depends. Works as a decent sucker-punch in the right circumstances if the defense isn't expecting it, but not something you can hang your hat on. They used to be 10X better fwiw, so I'm kinda with dahman above that I thought this thread would be about making them "effective" again.....

They are effective in one aspect. If you clog the middle to stop the run, then you allow the possibility that a counter will hit you for a long gain.

at lower levels counters are just so random that whenever one is called (as a DC) i just cringe expecting the worse. if there are 10 counters run, 8 will be TLFs, 1 will be a small gain and 1 will be an 80 yard TD scamper. doesn't seem to make much difference what the defense does at low levels, the dots have a mind of their own.

this is just another example of how certain elements of the game being built around WL play makes for unrealistic gameplay at lower levels.
