For example, if you're building a possession receiver, is it best to wait to add any skill points and just train it for a while, or should you continue to pump it up right from the start?

When I was most active in this game (between season 1-11) things were quite different when building a player, and I've yet to fully get the hang of things (especially the training/bonus token system).

You should train your primary attribute until you have enough SPs to reach the next cap. Once you are able to hit that cap, you should spend the SPs to get to that cap, then hold on to them until you can hit the next. Here is the list of softcaps (the attribute levels where it costs 1 SP more per point to increase the attribute) - http://wiki.goallineblitz.com/index.php/Ability_Softcaps

No, no they were not different. People just used stupid building instead of actually building well.

There were no bonus tokens, no multi-training, etc., etc.. Things are generally the same, but quite a few small tweaks have made an overall difference.

There were bonus tokens and multi-training way before season 11. In fact, season 4 had them already, so I'm willing to bet it is even earlier... And yes, it was stupid building, as holding onto SPs needlessly (SSB aside) was always a bad idea since the very start.

Pretty sure multi-training came into play in May of 2010 (s16).

April of 2010. Close enough.

I guess what he said is the time we can train two attribute at same time and get 5 bonus token.

That'd be a silly argument, lol. I almost forgot about the training pairings. Good times.

And to add to this, if you pay attention to things as you train, you'll notice you get a much higher percentage of gain when training a skill that is low (say starting at skill level 10) than one that is much higher (say training the same skill at skill level 60). It's because of these better gains in training that the general consensus is to hold skill points until you can reach the next cap level you're shooting for. This way you get the most out of your training.

Honestly, the way we build dots now is stupid, imo. Unfortunately Bort refused to do away with ALGs which has made today's builds "good" and builds from the early seasons "bad".

Well, two things.

First, even though many wanted to do away with the ALGs so that it was easier for newbies, an equally large band didn't want that. I guess bort chose the devil he already knew.

Second, define "now", because the way we build dots now is ... very similar to the way they've always been built. Hold onto SPs until we can cap, focus on effective training, etc...
