In the linked play the QB tosses the ball to the FB for a loss because he threw the ball too early.
The FB was the first guy in the check down.

Now I know I could have another dot earlier in the check down, and did this with the very same play in another package.
The problem, as you can see, is that the QB now spends a long time lingering on that first check down and makes the throw to him, for shorter yards than I would like from the play. In other plays it seems the first check also gets a long look and a high chance of being thrown to, so using a dot downfield is not going to help since it turns a high percentage play into a chancy deep bomb.
So.....what is the fix? I know it works out often. But is there a way to make SURE the unhurried QB does not just bean the RB a second into the play for a loss???
