I haven't personally tried it, but I would guess it is significant.

I would think 20% at least.

that

DE at LB used to be relatively common as far as out of position players go, but I never saw someone try a DT.

I've used a DT as a MLB in GL formation--didn't seem to be much of a penalty. One would suppose there would be more of a penalty to use a DT at OLB than ILB--but since that makes some sense it probably isn't true.

I've also used a SS as a LB in 4-4 sets and didn't see any huge problems there either.

Really, though, its impossible to really tell how much the OOPP hurts you without doing it way more than you should would take playing a whole season with a dot OOP to really quantify. if you need a guy for only certain formations or for just one game go for it--long term you're better of recruiting or adjusting your scheme to fit your personnel

why wouldn't you add an extra cb to the formation and line up the ss (or fs) in the position where you would want the extra linebacker?

edit: In my defense, I rarely have 3 LBs in the game. In fact, I build CBs to play in the cb 2 slot specifically for this reason (cb2 can move almost anywhere on the field)

i want to run 3-4, when they are in 2 WR sets. i do not have the CBs to play 3 in a 2 wr set .got 5 CBs if i play 3 always when they go to a 5 WR set all my CBs are going to be to tired...so the question is what is the penalty for a DT to play LILB? plzzz..and i got only 2 FSs an 1 SS so that is why i can not put one of them

No one knows the exact penalty. That is info only Bort knows. If I was to guess it would be a pretty drastic penalty. I would say you are better off going with 4-3 and dropping your DE's into a zone or something.
