Maybe I am missing the science to promotions but it seems I make more money without promotions. Fan support is not worth the Millions you spend on promotions. So in my opinion Promotions are not necessary.

I primarily use promotions for big home games to get a morale boost for my team. That +5 morale or so can mean the difference between a 10 point loss or a 3 point victory, especially against a stronger team where it's easy for your team to get down on morale after a big play or two.

Promotions are not about making money. They are about helping you win. Promotions give your players morale boosts which help them avoid performance killing morale drops in game.

The money side of the game has been neutered to the point that the only benefit of having money is being able to buy promotions and pay your players more which both increase players' in game morale.

You make more money on blowout games. The larger the point difference, the larger your profit.

Yeah, that's because there are typically far more plays in a blowout than a competitive game.
