I'd say allow it to be done after player creation, not as part of the process. Just like the player #s, offer a "player bio" section. That way the people who want it can do it, and the rest of us don't have to bother.
Change the suggestion so that you can add a player bio if you want once he is made and some people would like this. Then it wouldn't take any more time to create a player, and if you hated the feature, you could ignore it completely (like people do now with uniform numbers). But if you liked it you could use it. I just wonder how many people would use it though and whether it would be worth the time it took to code.

I also drew a parallel to the jersey number feature in my head -- something that doesn't directly impact the game, but can enrich the experience for those looking for extras.
