I'm going to change the format a tiny bit, I'm still going to do the rankings for each league, but instead of doing pro/con i'm just going to give a little blurb about each team, why their ranked where they are, etc. I'm going to break down the top 4 games from each conference in the upcoming week, most likely the ones with the biggest playoff implications, as we are now heading into the 2nd half of the season. I also think I am going to list top 5-10 MVP candidates and their stats, though that may just cause too much trouble b/c everyone will think someone is left out (especially if the whole Anchorage secondary isnt in it). Just thought i'd give a heads up to everyone
I will update here as I go
Western Conference
1. San Diego Marauders: 8-0
Previous Ranking: 1
Comments: This team is simply the best in the conference at the moment no doubt about it. This next game against Reno will be a test but they are very well coached so you have to expect they’ll be ready. They have a pretty tough schedule in the 2nd half with games against Albuquerque, Omaha, and Chattanooga, on top of the Reno game remaining. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain this undefeated record
Next Opponent: Reno 911
2. Anchorage Seawolves: 7-1
Previous Ranking: 2
Comments: With their only loss being to San Diego, in the best game of the season, this is right where this team should be. Anchorage is the most outspoken team in their conference, for good cause. Love them or hate them they are a force, and are taking out their frustrations on the SD loss against the teams they are playing. Trojan never really stood a chance
Next Opponent: Chattanooga Quarantine
3. Omaha Dogs: 7-1
Previous Ranking: 4
Comments: Omaha moves up one in the rankings to number 3 after their domination of Corvallis. In my opinion, this is the team San Diego needs to watch out for. They have destroyed every team they have played since week 1, and that should continue this week. The game in 2 weeks against Anchorage is going to be fun to watch.
Next Opponent: Oakyville Nungas
4. Reno 911: 7-1
Previous Ranking: 3
Comments: Reno moves down even after winning only because of the superb play of Omaha. I still believe Reno is a great team, and will give San Diego a run for their money.
Next Opponent: San Diego Marauders
5. Chattanooga Quarantine: 7-1
Previous Ranking: 5
Comments: QB Kenny Palmer has been a prime time player all season long. His 3 TD game against Oakyville was no exception. He’s going to need to keep performing well down the stretch for this team to stay where they are. It’s amazing that a 7-1 team is only the 5th best team in its conference.
Next Opponent: Anchorage Seawolves
6. Albuquerque Mustangs: 6-2
Previous Ranking: 6
Comments: In my opinion this is the last of the upper tier teams in the West. Albuquerque had outscored opponents 160-3 in their last 3 games. One of the teams being Hyborian who is probably going to make the playoffs this year. The Mustangs were a top 3 team last year and are looking to prove they are again this year. They are not far away. I’ll predict they score around 75-100 in this next game
Next Opponent: Ambridge Brigade
7. Rocky Mountain Rampage: 5-3
Previous Ranking: 7
Comments: It’s hard for me to figure out Rocky Mountain. They beat all the teams they are supposed to, which is key. They don’t really put up a fight vs San Diego, the Anchorage game was close, but they never challenged, but than against Reno they step it up, make a 4th quarter comeback and lose on a last second FG in what was a great game to watch if you haven’t already. Props to them for almost pulling off the upset, you’ve proven you are a legit playoff team (in my book).
Next Opponent: Trojan Warriors
8. Hyborian Divine Messengers: 5-3
Previous Ranking: 8
Comments: I want to believe in Hyborian, I really do. Their struggles to put away San Francisco, Houston, and Kalamazoo really worry me. They have a big win over Chattanooga under their belts which is big. The problem is their final 4 games. They face Anchorage/Rocky Mountain/San Diego/Memphis. The 3 western teams in that are all major players and Memphis is the equivalent to Omaha/Albuquerque in terms of high scoring, good defense. It’s gonna be a tough road for this team, they’ll probably need to win the next four or they might kiss their playoff hopes goodbye.
Next Opponent: Dakota Ruffians
9. San Francisco Wildcats: 4-4
Previous Ranking: 10
Comments: The good news is a big 3 game winning streak for the Wildcats puts them right in the playoff picture. The bad news is they haven’t played Anchorage, Reno, or San Diego yet. They should be able to get a couple more wins but they got unlucky and drew Chicago as their out of conference opponent. It’d be nice to see them somehow slip into the playoffs though
Next Opponent: Corvallis Furburgers
10. Oakyville Nungas: 1-7
Previous Ranking: 12
Comments: The way this team plays I have a hard time dropping them too low, the problem is they just can’t win. WR Negro Wilson has been one of the best players in the league all season and this team may only lose 1 -2 more game all season. Don’t be surprised if they sneak into the 8 seed at 8-8
Next Opponent: Omaha Dogs
11. Houston Apollos: 2-6
Previous Ranking: 11
Comments: After losing to Rocky Mountain and Hyborian by 1 point each you got the feeling this team was regaining some of its early season magic that won them their 1st two games. Then they faced San Diego….then they lost 42-3. This is another team that might only lose 1-2 more games. The 8 seed in the west is very much in reach for the Apollos, especially being 1 game up on Oakyville. The losses to Hyborian and Rocky Mountain and who are in 7th and 8th but both at 5-3 are what hurts them most
Next Opponent: Kalamazoo Wolverines
12. Corvallis Furburgers: 2-6
Previous Ranking: 9
Comments: Stories of infighting rocked BBB 14 this week as many reports out of Corvallis hinted at the team not getting along. While their last 8 might be easier than any other team, who knows if they can get it together. As of right now I don’t have much faith
Next Opponent: San Francisco Wildcats
13. Kalamazoo Wolverines: 1-7
Previous Ranking: 14
Comments: The offensive line just hasn’t gotten it done for the Wolverines this season. QB Magneto Rex who was one of the best last season has been hurred 5 more times this season than last. HB Barry Sanders_#20 has seen his YPC drop almost 2 full yards. You’d have to think that has something to do with their 1-7 record.
Next Opponent: Houston Apollos
14. Trojan Warriors: 2-6
Previous Ranking: 13
Comments: Trojan’s next 3 games are brutal as they face Rocky Mountain, San Diego and Reno. It’s cool that they were able to get on a little winning streak, and they may have another win or 2 up their sleeve, but they are not built to compete in this league, at least at the moment.
Next Opponent: Rocky Mountain Rampage
15. Dakota Ruffians: 0-8
Previous Ranking: 15
Comments: I think the Dakota/Ambridge matchup might be better than San Diego/Anchorage. Who else is with me?
Next Opponent: Hyborian Divine Messengers
16. Ambridge Brigade: 0-8
Previous Ranking: 16
Comments: See Dakota
Next Opponent: Albuquerque Mustangs
Western Games to Watch in Week 9
#1 San Diego at #4 Reno
This was one of the big three games I personally have been waiting for in the Western Conference. Reno’s loss to Anchorage and close games against Oakyville and Rocky Mountain have cooled me down on them a little bit, but this should still be a good game. Both teams are run very well and while San Diego is currently on top, don’t be surprised if Reno can pull this one out. It’s going to a matchup between what may be the 2 best QBs in the West in Jake Obergfell and Rip VanWinkle.
#2 Anchorage at #5 Chattanooga
The Seawolves immediately got back on track after their loss to San Diego, but their schedule didn’t get any easier. They took care of Reno and now have to go into Chattanooga and attempt to take out the Quarantine whose only loss of the season came to Hyborian. Chattanooga really has a tough schedule that it is going to make it tough for them to have a 1st rd home playoff game. I have to lean towards Anchorage in this game, but look for the Quarantine to keep it interesting
#12 Corvallis Furburgers at #9 San Francisco Wildcats
This is a big game for both teams as they look to sneak into the 7/8 spots in the playoffs. San Francisco is on a 3 game winning streak, surprising everyone by being at 4-4 halfway through the season. This is a very winnable game for them and if they can pull it out, they’ll help their slim playoff hopes. Even with a 4-4 record they have to face 5 top teams in the last 8 weeks so things aren’t looking good Corvallis on the other hand has gotten through the hard part of their schedule at 2-6, with only Albuquerque remaining as a game that they will have a lot of trouble winning. The problem is they seem to have some internal issues and if they can’t get things going they will be in trouble. They’ll need to win at least 6/8 to have a chance, and this is a good place to start
#10 Oakyville at #3 Omaha
Omaha has set themselves up well after their 1st week loss I talk about so much, and looks to be in the drivers seat as far as having an opening round home game. This is a top game because with Oakyville, you never know whats going to happen. They have played a few of the top teams very well and with some luck they could do the same to Omaha. I think Omaha will overpower them in the end but who knows, maybe this is when the Nungas can finally get a W against a top team
