When a player is in zone coverage in the game now, it seems to me that once all defenders have passed through his zone he inserts thumb and twiddles.

I admit my only football experience which is limited anyway is on the line, and while I watch the game I do not break it down. So maybe I am totally off base here.

But if someone is in a zone coverage in the NFL and there are no receivers in front of him and none coming across the field towards him laterally and none in the backfield, does he REALLY just stand around doing nothing?

I would think not unless he was assigned to spy for a scramble.

I would think, rather, that he might continue downfield with the last receiver to pass through his zone, or move to a deeper zone. Or blitz.

I would certainly think that this could be an option, anyway.

So....when assigned a zone coverage in the custom D play, add a second window to show his assignment should he upon a vision check determine that his zone is going cold without any other prospective receivers enroute to it. This could be another zone, man nearest receiver, blitz, or spy QB or empty which would mean he stays in his zone coverage throughout the play.

Doable?

Desirable?

Dumb?

What say you?

Kinda like the reverse of what we have now. If they are in zone have the last drop down menu enable you to select which offensive dot to cover.

+1. Of course, a missed vision check could mean he runs off to cover someone/somewhere else when there actually is someone who is a risk to come into his zone. It would still probably be worth the risk to give a secondary assignment in most cases.

Exactly...but at least we can determine our own intentions. Since we can't assign progressions such as containment...we have to use zones or man coverage for them. If I send a LB or DE to flat, its because I really need him to contain but he cant be trusted to just do it naturally.

Adding the ability to do a 2nd progression (when his 1st setting is zone) would be a good thing for DCs.

I'm not sure how doable it is. A crossing route (especially on a slow TE or whatever) could easily trigger a "no one in front of me" situation - but you still don't want to vacate your zone.

I notice in my TEs and sometimes my WR (especially if it's in the slot) if the QB is getting pressure, they will turn back and start heading toward the QB to offer up some outlet help. They don't run straight back toward the line of scrimmage, but they usually head toward the center of the field or outside toward the flat which means they are crossing zones from side angles and not coming directly back in.

I suppose it would probably be possible to do, but then if you require a vision check, there are a huge number of variables in there and it would more likely muddle the situation more than it helps.

I'm not opposed to the idea, but I've seen a lot of ideas with a whole lot fewer variables involved get shot down as overly complex or whatever.

That player is suppose to stay in his area.

Of course GLB has one difference. The back guy that covers the deep zone always stays as deep as the deepest receivers.

FWIW I think you have to look at through an admin the will be woring on this eyes. To make the player know to go aomewhere were he wasn't told in the original play design. IDK how hard that would be but imo it would be hard. But I like the idea.

+1 should be doable from coding, logic like this:

if noone in the zone
then scan field every (x) ticks
if scan field = everyone down field from you
then begin backing up your zone.

Couldn't be as hard as trying to figure out what you just said.
