If it wasnt for OC's, DC's, ST coaches, this game would be a giant casual crapfest, which is okay for some. Even then, in casual leagues, those guys still play a big role in how the team does. Yet despite the importance of these positions, there is little recognition for ANY of them.
What happens when a really good OC/DC takes a team that was 5-12 one season in pro, to 12-5 and a playoff team the next season in the same pro league? Nothing. Even in most team forums, the gratitude is lost. So GLB should start a system where OC's, DC's, ST coaches get awarded for their prowess at their position. I realize that I have left the 'Head Coach' spot out, but often times, a Head coach puts the right people into place, or takes offense, or defense. Even so, he should be able to put himself into that role officially as HC and OC/DC/STC. But even then...maybe someone can think of a good award for HC's, or a way to determine how it should be awarded??
I dont know how or necessarily what should be the best awards, but here are a couple of ideas to get this ball started:
Best Defensive Coach - This means their team allowed the least amount of yards through the air, ground, and TD's scored, or some ratio that is reasonable. Points scored against is obviously a factor, though having a weak offense can really skew this value....Turnovers can be thrown into the mix, though this seems like it could be more of a factor of individual dots than an DC themselves, so if this is given weight, discretion should be used on this one I think. Give awards to the top three contenders in the entire league (not conference). 'Making' an MVP or contenders for MVP's should also be considered somehow.
Best Rush Stuffer - The DC that allows the fewest rushing yards allowed, the guy above can also get this award, , but doesnt necessarily have to (based on the TD ratio)
Best Air Counter Strike - The DC that allows the fewest passing yards, the guy in best Defensive Coach can win this, but doesnt necessarily have to (based on the TD ratio)
-------------------------------
Best Offensive Coach - The coaches that get the most yards, be it through rushing or the air, and throw in TD's to get the ratio. Making MVP's should also be considered.
Best Ground Pounder - 'Mr. Ground and Pound'- The coach that gets the most yards/TD's through the ground game.
Best Air Strike - The coach that gets the most yards/TD's through passing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Teams Coach - prevents the least amount of return yards/TD's, while maximizing their return yards/TD's. Things like averages of punt returns and kickoff returns would be an easy way to gauge this. Throwing in things like turnovers caused could be very good as well. Since ST's is not defense, the placement of a SS versus a DT is not an easy choice, so the coach themselves saw some potential and put a guy in a spot. The addition of turnovers for determining best special teams coac is highly prudent and should be used. Again, some sort of ratio here would be best.
I would do a top three in each league for each position. Its about these people, who really make this game click and be fun, get some recognition. Dots get MVP's, why cant coaches/coordinators get some too? Having OC'd/DC'd/STC'd, its often thankless, even if you do a good job. Often times, its the owner of the team thanking you, and thats it. So make a stand GLB, and get these important, hard working people some official street cred!
And yes, what is above is not what should be used as a cut and dry template, but just a good starting point for something to actually be used. My job isnt to make this game better...its to enjoy it. This suggestion would help everyone enjoy it a little more I think. Recruiters could potentially get something too...but that would be a tough one to give anaward to, it would be very time intensive for an award determiner. Not to mention, most people get their dots from farm teams anymore anyway.
Very good idea from Rizyx:

i long ago stopped tracking the number of MVPs that i coached. as teams changed ownership, you cant even backtrack from the mvp to the coach. would be nice for some way to prove that you've coached up a bunch of mvps.

Every agent with a player in the respective league has their vote count for one. Overall, the user voting counts for +/-50% of the final count?
Not sure how votes could work...some teams have a more online presence than others and a voting system could be heavily abused. Stats should probably be 85% of what determines candidates, but a sound idea if implemented wisely I think.

Things like Mr. Ground and Pound for rushing dominace (best average of Rushing Yards, Rushing TDs and YPC)
and Mr. Air Raid (best average of Completions, Completion %, Rating, Yards Per Attempt, Passing Yards, Passing TDs).
You could do this for alot of things. Mr Pressure for Sacks, Mr. Bandit for INTs, for being the best at producing a certain Statistic. This way guys that didn't get the overall but still were a top at something can get the credit as well.
Perhaps even a Ranking System, broke down by each type (HC, OC, DC, STC).
I like the idea for Mr. Pressure and all those awards. Could it be kept symmetric and give similar types of awards for offense? Maybe Mr. Checkdown for an OC that only throws to HB's and TE's? Maybe an award for an OC that scouts a D really well and consistantly hits WRs? Dunno, but i like it!

Lots of times, co-owners OC/DC or whatever and only get co-owner titles. My main issue is GLB tracking the last person to set the D to bestow these honors. Or, there should be an internal check box for who actually gets the award or something.
But as a general concept, +1
Yes, agree on the general concept, it definitely needs work. If a system like this gets implemented, I think people will be more judicious with handing out OC/DC/ST titles. So it would affect that aspect, but I think this suggestion would really bring value and some more 'meaning' to being an OC/DC/ST coach.

I disagree on the first part. I think setting up some code based on an algorithm would be easy. There are lots of Greasemonkey scripts that already rank teams that people post in league forums that something like this would take very little to design to determine who gets what. Deciding who gets what is probably the hardest part of that discussion.
I like the second part though. Very good idea there.
