This guide will help teams who struggle on the offensive side of the ball create a good offense.
This offense is based on the S21 season, so might need to be adjusted for future seasons pending on what changes are made. This offense also presumes that any inside rushing game will average 2+ yards a carry.
You only need 4 packages:
1. Inside Runs - any run by the HB/FB/QB that goes INSIDE the TE and the LOT. This includes sneaks, dives, slams, off-tackles, etc.
2. Outside Runs - any run by the HB/FB/QB that goes OUTSIDE the TE & LOT. This includes rollouts, sweeps, pitches, handoffs, etc.
3. Short Passes - any pass where the ball is caught within 5 yards of the LoS. This includes all screens, most HB/FB passes, as well as quick cut or come back routes by the WR/TE
4. Deep Passes - any pass where the ball is caught deeper than 5 yards, most often by a WR or TE, but some HB/FB routes are deep as well.
I am not going to tell you which plays to populate those packages with, that's up to you to do. If you want help doing that, scout various Gold teams and see which plays they use the most often and copy those plays.
Now for your offensive AI. The order of these inputs is very important, so put them in as-is...
4th & 0-2
100% Inside Runs
*you should always go for it if you have 2 or less yards!
4th & FG Range
100% FG
*kick a FG when you are within range on 4th and more than 2 yards from the 1st.
4th & 2-8
100% Short Passes
*Punt returns are dangerous, so I like to go for it most of the time when I don't have too far to go.
4th & inside the 30
50% Deep Passes
50% Outside Runs
*you can't punt inside the 30, so call your two big play packages. I like to call outside runs here as most defenses are expecting a deep pass and those defenses might not be setup well to stop an outside run.
4th & 8+
100% Punt
*There is where I usually kick it as the chances of getting 8 yards on a passing play with the defense expecting a pass is very low.
3rd & 0-4
100% Inside Runs
*as long as you can average 2 yards per carry, you should get a 1st down.
3rd & 4-10
100% Short Passes
*good spot for your short passes.
3rd & 10+
50% Deep Passes
50% Outside Runs
*you have a long way to go, break out your big play packages. I like to call outside runs here as most defenses are expecting a deep pass and those defenses might not be setup well to stop an outside run.
2nd & 0-6
100% Inside Runs
*as long as you average 2+ per carry, you should get a 1st down.
2nd & 6+
100% Short Passes
*your short pass package is your highest % completion passing package, so call it here.
1st Down
50% Short Passes
25% Deep Passes
25% Outside Runs
*good mix for 1st down plays no matter the distance.
I am not going into any quarter specific calls as this AI is intended to be a base for people to build their own custom AI with.
