Congratulations (
) to the Kansas City Rams who've locked up the #1 seed in the West. Even if they lost the remainder of their games the worst they could do is tie the Aftershocks...and they own the tiebreaker!
Three other teams have also locked in a playoff spot, though just which one has yet to be determined. The Manitoba Aftershocks control their own destiny with an 11-2 record they're one game ahead of the Northern Polar Bears and St. John's Salty Dogs. Even better for Manitoba, they own the tiebreaker against both teams since they won the regular season contest against each of them. They'd have to finish 1-2 with both Northern & St. John's ending 3-0 to end up anywhere other than second. The Polar Bears have a tight grasp on the #3 seed with their head-to-head victory over the Salty Dogs who are hoping to grab the final home field spot in the playoffs. They'd have to finish 1-2 or worse to miss out on the home game.
Not only do the Bloodhounds and Mules share the location of Thunder Bay, they have identical 8-5 records so far. The Bloodhounds have the Battletoads, Rams, and Northern Railers on the schedule...one who has locked up the #1 seed and two that have been eliminated from the playoffs already. The Mules have the Salty Dogs, Walruses, and Whalers. St. John's is fighting for a home game, Windsor still has an outside shot at the playoffs (but can't afford to lose), and Tadoussac is clawing & scratching to hold onto the #7 seed. Neither has an easy road, but the Mules opponents have more at stake...it's never easy to face a team that's putting it all on the line.
The current #7 & 8 seeds belong to the Tadoussac Whalers and Brooklyn Boyz, two newcomers to CPL this season. The Whalers begin their final three with the Hornpayne Northern Railers followed by the Northern Polar Bears and Thunder Bay Mules. The Brooklyn Boyz have the Husker Maniacs, Wrath, and Rams to finish the season. For Brooklyn it rests on today's game vs. Nebraska...they're 1-1 in the other two games...will they finish 9-7 or 8-8? The Whalers should, on paper, beat Hornpayne...but stranger things have happened. They're not favored against either the Polar Bears or Mules and would love to win two out of three to lock up a spot.
Both the Kansas City Gorillas and Windsor Walruses have dug deep holes for themselves to try and make the playoffs. Even if they both win out and go 9-7, the tiebreakers don't do them many favors. That's without mentioning that the Gorillas still have to face the Aftershocks and Salty Dogs in their final three while Windsor draws the Polar Bears and Mules. The Husker Maniacs are the only other team with a mathematical chance to make the playoffs...but if would first require that they win their remaining three games against Brooklyn, Manitoba, and Red River. If they accomplish that daunting task, then they need for a few other things to fall into place.
In less than an hour some of these questions will have been answered. Good luck to all who still have a shot!
