Think he said balanced..
I would look for First Step.. That would help him in both blocking & when carrying the ball.

I understand he said balanced... even so it's generally dumb to be too balanced and it's better to take a bit of a focus in one area or the other. For example, my FB is a balanced build with an offensive focus. I.E. he can block, as well as contribute offensively. A build that is too balanced is sub-par at both facets of their position. GLB is not like real football, where a sub-par player can catch a defense out of position and be productive... the other day one of the OCs put in the wrong OAI and the team gave the blocking build the ball instead of my FB... he averaged a full yard less per carry and a full 7 yards less per reception. That's compared to my season average too, against that team, I'd probably have had close to double the yards per touch than he did.
That's why you should take a focus, if you go for a balanced build. Splitting VAs and AEQ is not a very good idea, unless you want to be a blocker who can catch a bit or run a bit (but not do both, just not enough VA PTs to go around). A blocking build with scat back, catching and carrying would work well. A blocking build with a decent amount of carrying and bruiser would work fine. An offensive build with outside blocker and some blocking would also work well. So on and so forth... The only benefit of my build over a full offensive build is that I can be used as a decoy and still be somewhat of an effective blocker (for say QB runs, inside HB runs, pass protection and/or on special teams). I sacrificed some in key attributes to have some blocking ability. On my baby FB, I've learned my lesson and I'm going for a full offensive build.

You could always go with the Non-Focused VAs, you know, Slow Starter, Red Zone Freak, HoaC, etc, VAs that will work whether you're blocking or carrying the ball.

But then you'll suck offensively TBQH. Attributes are nice, but they do not make a good ball-carrier... my FB is a perfect example of this... my lolbars suck (because my attributes suck), but I out-produce FBs with much better lolbars (whose attributes blow mine out of the water), due primarily to my VA and AEQ selections.

me too
It's all about the VAs and a few select SAs. The good part about that is that if you really needed to, you could switch you're VAs around over a couple seasons and convert your guy. The bad part about that, IMO, is that it's tempting for people to try to straddle the fence and be balanced. It doesn't work.
TBH, attempting to be balanced is the only sure way to fail for a FB, IMO.
