technically he did the right thing. in a situation like that the best thing a safety or lb can do is over pursue and get to the sideline and turn the play back inside. if he doesn't and goes inside there's always a chance that who ever has the ball on offence could break it down the sideline and go all the way. he he might have given up a few more yards on the play by going outside but he took away any possibility of a big play developing down the sideline

It seems like SSs responsibility is often to shut off the outside first, and then make
the tackle after the long gain has been eliminated. Not so dumb.

In all seriousness, that's the corners job to shutdown the outside. The linebackers are supposed to get right outside the tackle to tackle box for run plays to the sides. The safety fills the gap and kills the RB.

regardless of what players are supposed to do his guy did the right thing in that situation.
