that is pretty weird. especially for the MLB

They couldn't tell whether or not the QB was passing, so leaving their zone to tackle the QB would be blitzing, which they weren't assigned to do. Once the QB was recognized as a rusher, they pursued him.

Its when the guys the defenders are supposed to be man covering stay into block. They're secondary option is zone and thats what they do. Tell your DC to change it to blitz instead of zone.
