I was just thinking to myself...
Is it really optimal for most peewee teams even consider punting in the first couple of games? I feel like the punters can not kick it very far at all, and after the return the net gain of the punt is often only 5 or 10 yards. Isn't it better to remove the risk of having punt return TD's by just running up the gut or trying a long pass play? Here are some facts about punting... I'm using the Gold league as an example because they're supposed to be the best of the best.
The highest Punt average was 27.1 yards per punt: the highest return average was 24.2 yards per punt.
The lowest punt average (not including the 0's) was 12.9 yards per punt. The lowest punt return average was 7.4 yards per punt.
The average PR is 13.69 yards. The average Punt was 23.67. An average net of just under 10 yards. Considering the fact that you can probably rush for 4 yards on a 4th down instead of punting; this saves you about 6 yards.
There were 21 punt return touchdowns as of today in the gold league.
Is saving 6 or 7 yards really worth the risk?
Obviously some of the gold teams have really good punters, so consider what these numbers would look like for the silver and copper leagues? Also consider what these numbers looked like after the 1st game.
Just my rant for the day
. And my real motives for writing this are to get some advice on the issue.. so please feel free to jab the idea.
Thanks
