Not sure how much can be gained but he is about to be retired so I figured I would post/open his build in case it might help someone. I did so many things wrong when building him as I had no idea what I was doing back in seasons 1 and 2 but in the end he turned out being a productive player. He never put up massive stats as he spent almost his entire career at NT in USA pro but he did a good job of plugging up the middle.

I stopped upgrading his equipment at lvl 56 and his 2 pieces of advanced equipment started as +1 Snarl +3 Agility and +1 Shed Blocks +1 Agility.

Best of luck to all building DTs!

so do you think 10 in breakthrough was worth it?

I had a DT with 10 breakthrough and it was a POS. Only chance to fire is against double teams and then I only really saw it go off a few times - but then again, our other DT had 0 in it and I saw him break through about the same amount.

Just my experience.

I think breakthrough is a bonus to shed block %. How effective it is depends on the build.

I don't think it was worth taking that high without a piece of advanced equipment boosting it. I took it high early on and then near the end I went ahead and finished it off. One of the big mistakes I made was putting points into SAs early on when I should have been putting them all into strength and agility.

This

With the right build I think it can do wonders.

I think 90% of the season 1 players could say the same thing. (Remember the initial player build guide from tpat that suggested spending 1 pt in SAs for every 3-5 pts spent in attributes?)

I remember when I got a season 2 team having to tell my players to lay of the SA Crack pipe.

Of course some of those builds were still salvageable because being able to roll 7s in attributes let you start out with ungodly high attribute values in your majors.

breakthrough only works against the run though, from what i understand

shed blocks works against run and pass

well it's interesting to know that he didn't find a lot of value in it for this particular build.

It is tough to say exactly when Shed Block vs Breakthrough was firing since I had them both high. So while I do think taking it to 10 (9 with CE) without a piece of advanced equipment is too high that doesn't mean I wouldn't take it to 5 and then find a piece of AE to add to it. I do think some combination of them helped as I would almost always outperform other NTs on my teams who had similar, or even slightly better, attributes but lower SAs in those 2.

Regardless, as is common knowledge now, avoiding all SAs until you have base stats where you want them is the way to go. And with how much the game changes I probably wouldn't suggest taking any SA above 6 unless you are near the end of your career and really believe it will help because it is simply too many points to invest in something that might be worthless next season.

Standard thinking by most seems to be to avoid all SAs for your entire career, which I definitely disagree with. But say you have a guy with 80+ natural in strength and agility and almost 80 in speed, and maxed shed block. Well what are you gonna do after that, second, third cap vision? Second cap confidence? Two or three more points in strength or agility? Or maybe go with something like breakthrough? It's definitely a question worth considering thoroughly, without relying on unexamined, reactionary, anti-SA opinions.

I don't think I've ever read about avoiding SA's for your entire career. So that can't be standard thinking. The standard thinking is to just avoid SA's for a couple seasons while you can hit the caps earlier and get better level gains out of it.

SA's modify attributes, so after awhile, SA's are very desireable.

I noticed your stats got a big boost in this last season.

any reason for that?

He went to a league where opponents OL weren't as good.

Yeah 2 seasons ago the USA pro team I was on broke up. I went to a Canada pro team that ended up getting demoted. So the final season was at AAA.
