Now that the regular season has finally started, all of us in the Country of Dunan can get back to following our favorite team; the Stars of Destiny. The regular season may be off to a rough start, but this is not indicative of the rest of the season. The results of the first game look a little worse than how things really did go. The Dark Vampire easily beat the Stars in final score of 72-10.
Some of the bright spots in an otherwise grim looking game came in the form of two wide receivers: Luc, primarily at kick returner and punt returner, and Alen. Luc finished the game with over 250 yards in kick returns and over 50 yards in punt returns. Alen had a wonderful game with 6 catches and 96 yards though he did fail to get into the endzone. The brightest spot on the defense had to come from outside linebacker Lazlo who finished the game with 8 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack for a 6 yard loss.
It seemed to start out in a positive note when Luc returned the opening kickoff for 16 yards to get the offense a starting position on the 33.5 yard line. However the pace of the game was revealed as the offense stepped onto the field. 1st down Tir McDohl is sacked, 2nd down Viktor is tackled for a loss on a pitch play, 3rd down it looked like another sack when Tir broke from the pocket and had a 9.5 yard rush only to fall short of the first down marker and the Stars were forced to punt. The defense did a fairly good job to open the game and limited the Vampire to only a field goal. However when the Stars went through another 3 and out, the Vampire returned the following punt 76.5 yards for a touchdown. To finish out the quarter the Stars gave up one more punt return TD and 40 yard pass Touchdown.
1st quarter score
Vampire: 24
Stars: 0
The 2nd quarter only got worse as the Stars special teams gave up 5 more punt return touchdowns, and one more long touchdown pass. Kicker L.C. Chan did get the stars on the board with a 19.5 yard field goal with three and a half minutes left in the half.
Halftime Score
Vampire: 66
Stars: 3
In the second half I'm not sure if the Vampire decided to just go into to cruise control as the game was wrapped up for them, or if the Stars finally started getting things together and working as a team. but they only gave up 2 field goals for the entire second half. The offense got a bit of a jump in the 3rd quarter when they had a 9 play drive that went 50 yards and ended in a Tir McDohl touchdown to WR Miklotov. Nothing else of note happened for the rest of the game as it turned into a stalemate between an overmatched team and one who had already won and was just cruising until the final whistle blew.
After the game I caught up with the star WR Alen and asked him a few question about the game. "The receptions and yards are nice and look good no my stat sheet, but I would be happy to not catch another pass if it would mean that we could win every game." This attitude is not shared by everyone on the team though "We would have definitely won had they fed me the ball more," said HB Viktor " with only 8 rushes how can they expect us to win anything at all. I need to be able to pound the ball into the defense and wear them out if we are to have a chance."
We will see how this team gels and comes together in the coming weeks. If they lose another game will their HB become more of a distraction or will the rest of the team be able to work together despite his attitude. If they win how will the attitudes change and can the coach find a balance between the passing game he obviously adores and the running game that seems to be able to carry the team much better. Only time will tell.
