I recall spiking the ball was broken and I'm wondering if they've fixed it yet. I've never tried to use it and can't recall seeing a game where a team spiked when out of time outs in the 4th since about 3 seasons ago, where the ball got spiked 3 downs in a row for some hapless fool. So does it work yet?

Nope. It's still useful, but broke as fuck.
All you can really do is spike it on 1st & 10 with 0 timeouts left.
What this does, after you use your last timeout, if it's 1st down, you'll spike it. After that first wasted down, it'll work as intended, every time you get a first down.
That wasted down really isn't a big deal, if you think about it. Timeouts are only called with less than 2 minutes remaining, so when you waste the first 1st down, you're probably looking at 1:30 or less on the clock. Time is more important than downs, and if you can't move the chains in 3 downs, (obviously, you're in 4 down territory) you aren't going to score anyway.
In short, it's fucked up, but still worth it to set it up to spike on 1st down with 0 timeouts.

ok thanks - it's still broke. I'll assume the damn thing won't recognize how you got the 1st down - like off a kick return where the clock should be stopped anyway or off an encroachment penalty. they really should fix it so it won't be called if the clock is stopped, can't be that hard to fix. I'm constantly amazed they won't fix simple crap like calling time outs when you're ahead by 200 and kicking extra points off a game winning TD in overtime etc.

Spiking the ball is broke since there isn't a "Clock is stopped" input.
So at best, you will be wasting a down.
At worst, you will be wasting 3 downs when the clock was already stopped.

its kinda hugely silly that its still broke
the sim knows if the clock is stopped, a simple check would solve the problem
we already know the code logic checks for certain situations before executing a trigger (cant call a kneel in the ez), so there no reason the sim couldnt check for a running clock and ignore a call for a spike
but yeah, its still useful. but wasting a down IS a big deal imo. not big enough to not use it, but still quite aggravating when it happens

ah, spiking is a bit of a cheap tactic anyways, I kind of like the fact that teams have to run a real play while there's still time on the clock

Not if there is 3 seconds left in the 4th quarter, you are down by 2, and you're in FG range.
